Hey, Super Mario Galaxy was a beautiful game.
Graphically? Yeah, it pushed the Wii's system capabilities pretty hard. But from an artistic standpoint, "beauty" becomes so much more subjective. Where you have games which push their genres through art, like BioShock, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, or even Team Fortress 2, Mario becomes the bright-pastel, fun 3D game it's always been. Its narrative--or lack thereof--isn't pushed by its style or environment. Comparatively, Mario's not really a beautiful game. But would we really want it to be any other way? I don't want Mario to tell me a story--thus giving me good reason to skip over those god awful story book segments in SMG--I want it to be plain old fun.
