Actually, the Hi-Nu isn't bulky, the back part just makes it look like it. If you took it out, it kinda looks like the Re-GZ in a way.

It could also be the style that they are drawn in makes them appear thicker too.

Only some of them. Maybe because the drawing style of the 80's and mid 90's isn't slick as it is now.

I'd have to agree that they do look a bit on the bulky side, but I feel as well that it may be in part due to the style of animation at the time

Strange, not a mention of the Psyco Gundam...

Anyway, not all Gundams in the Universal Century are that bulky. Take the first one for example, the RX-78-2. It probably is the slimmest, most compact mobile suit in the entirety of the One Year War. Then there's F91 onwards, where it almost is a rule that mobile suits should not stand above 15 meter, and even the Gundams aren't exempted.

Seraevee, Providence and Virtue were massive. I think Heavyarms was supposed to look big too, but the suit designed rendered it thin.

Definetly. My favorite being the Ex-S gundam. oh wait... I read the question wrong. No they don't, they're just taller or bigger usually. Until the era of F91 and on anyways...

Favorite mecha designs:
1st:
UC Gundam

2nd
G Gundam (Super robots + Gundams = WIN)

Gundam 00 ( they're the most human like and very fresh looking)

Gundam W (I kinda like Wing more than Wing Zero Custom)

Turn A (Yes I love Turn A, Turn X, and GOLDEN SUMO ftw)

No I do not think they are bulky. I think the AU suits are to slim. Think about it. In the beginning of the UC mobile suits were a new invention. They were first used in construction right? Take a look at construction vehicles. I would call them bulky. Another similarity to look at is the automobile. The automobile when it was first invented was bulky. Over the time line of the UC suits do get slim compared to earlier.
