Since christianity was formally adopet by roman empire as state religion, it is normal that it incorporated many roman "pagan" celebrations. But that is normal for every religion, since in every religion we see "summing up" of past religions plus adding some new flavour. It really is a shame that christmas is all about presents nowdays, but i suppose that is the reason it is so widespread. But on the other side, presents do make people happy, no matter the reason, so even if christmas is comercialized it still fills its purpose: to celebrate and make people happy.

That's cause Japan was opened up thanks to America during the time of impearlism. Japan was an isolated country that America tried to open up. They showed Japan a bunch of machines, so Japan sent a bunch of people to research america and they could can also become advanced.

Lol wow religion must be pretty hypocritical, but it's no suprise. Alot of religions are against each other anyways which would explain the crusades. I wonder if they're going to have another since alot of wars actually kinda connect with race or religion at some way.

no, religion isnt hypocritical, its just run by hypocritical people. Most religions are not against each other anymore, this isnt the year 534 AD. The crusades are over and were more political then religious. Wars are connected with humanity. Most wars were fought over power and land rather then God and pride. And Christmas is no longer a religious holiday. peace over war

That's true but you got to see a bunch of people hating religion every know and then. Theres still some racial fights out this world you know but I do have to agree people became more tolerable these times.

I know that, what I meant was why is Japan copying western traditions?

Those guys didn't just go there to study the machines and stuff. They also studied thier culture for years. So it was a matter of time that they took that idea of halloween.America did cultural diffusion with Japan so it's kinda natural for them to be copying. Hope that explains your answer cause I'm not good at answering

dont suppose it matters where the origins of christmas and all its traditions come from because the key reason for celebrating christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ everything else is just to make the season and the day more special in particular for those who do not believe in God/Jesus

my sentiments exactly. who cares if christmas is supposedly not christian in origin these days? christmas as a commercial landmine nowadays--as a valid reason for people to spread the holiday cheer despite not knowing what are they exactly celebrating for?

Its supposed to make the day more special for atheists.....when the day is for Christians? Christmas is for the so called day Jesus was born but mostly I think people celebrate it for their children's sake! But it has gotten way out of control at the fact people go into to debt just to buy the bullshit required to make Christmas special

CHRISTMAS TREE
Cost: $40 (average).

CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENTS
Cost: $10, assuming you buy one new ornament set or hanging keepsake per year (about $100 to decorate the whole tree).

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS
Cost: $5.33 (based on six 100-bulb strings of mini or icicle lights, on for eight hours a day).

OUTDOOR HOLIDAY DECORATIONS
Cost: $21.53 (based on a modest light display of 10 125-bulb strings of 5-watt lights and two spotlights, on for five

hours a day).

GIFTS
Cost: $616. (According to a Nov. 19 Gallup Poll, Americans will spend an average of $616 on Christmas gifts this year - the lowest in the 10 years Gallup has been tracking Christmas spending. In 2007, Americans on average spent $866 for Christmas gifts.)

HOLIDAY CARDS AND GIFT WRAP
Cost: $64.

HOLIDAY MEALS
Cost: $35 to $100. (A Koo Koo Roo pre-cooked full holiday dinner for four, for instance, costs $99.99; buying all the ingredients at Wal-Mart and preparing it yourself costs $35).

AVERAGE TOTAL CHRISTMAS COST
$792 ($947 if you buy a full set of tree ornaments and a pre-cooked holiday meal.)

That's alot of much needed money that could go into other things like paying bills!
An exceprt from Cal Thomas...........
I’m not sure it’s worth keeping Christmas anymore. Oh, it is fine for those apparently dwindling numbers of Christians who still believe in the "original cast" of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the Wise Men and the animals. They, as any post-Thanksgiving shopper (not to mention postmodern) shopper knows, have been replaced by the road show of reindeer, winter scenes, elves and the God substitute, Santa Claus, who serves as a front for merchants seeking to profit from the guilt some parents bear for ignoring their kids the rest of the year…

Why participate any longer in this charade, whose focal point of worship has shifted from a babe in the manger to a babe in the Victoria’s Secret window? From Gold, frankincense and myrrh to Bailey Banks and Biddle? No room in the inn has been replaced by no room in the mall parking lot. If God would get a lawyer out of hell, he might be justified in suing for copyright infringement: God’s great story has been hijacked and transformed into its opposite. People who celebrate the authentic Christmas might want to reconsider whether they wish to engage in the other thing that captures so much attention and costs so much money."

I agree that people spend waaaaay to much on christmas!! in my family we just re-use everything like the christmas tree and decorations every year all we spend money on are the presents and my parents give me a set price for my relatives ect but there are some families who spend hundreds on present for their kids and that annoys me cuz it just spoils them and takes away the true meaning of christmas which is a lot about giving

the bastards killed the pagans and stole their holidays, but at least they got their comeuppance briefly when they were being thrown to the lions in Rome a while ago.

Oh, and christ was born in september.

A 13 year old bashing Christians? lol. I'm sure there are plenty of stupid atheists out there. Does that mean I can say that atheists are stupid? No. By the way, nobody knows when Christ was born. I don't think it's all that important when He was born anyways.

As for the topic, I personally don't label Christmas as a Christian holiday. It's just like any other holiday for fun and more family time.

All Christians (and other objects of whatever god worshipping religions) are stupid the same way all retards are stupid; irrevocably, a bit like how not labelling CHRISTmas a Christian holiday is like looking at a mango, thinking "Looks like mango...smells like a mango," yelling "NO!! IT CAN'T BE"and running off into the hills, sobbing like an emo who just heard they actually have something to be depressed about.

I'm not an Atheist.
I'm a satanist.
