Basically, because it could tighten certain people's problems with obscenity in the US even more, and bring the public's disapproving eye on manga. We know from experience that lots of anime has at least some nudity/partial nudity, whether it's a magical girl transformation sequence, an onsen scene, or full-blown tentacle rape. Americans are pretty up-tight about that sort of thing, so usually perverted manga and anime has to do its best to stay mostly out of the way to survive. When it's noticed by the less approving sort of American, ecchi, hentai, yaoi, yuri, BL, etc. will be flying off the shelves, and who knows what'll happen when they see the semi-nude magical girl stuff??

kind of stupid case that has no basis for the conviction. its like getting sued for drawing naked children. though im not interested in such manga, still its his choice to own these mangas. im pretty sure somewhere in america there is a sculpture of some nude baby looking cupids, but i dont see the owners getting convicted.

as a citizen living in US i don't know if i should laugh or cry...just by simply owning some mangas that's obscene could earn a min of 5 to max 20 years if found guilty

i guess the thing that struck me the most is the jail time that guy have to face if he's founded guilty, cause i mean, if the min is 5 and max is 20, then what's the difference between this and actual crime, last i checked a first degree robbery in new york could earn you from min 5 to max 25 years in prison....generally, and that's either inflicting bodily harm to others or carrying a dangerous weapon

there was also some other case a long while back that an adult was arrested for downloading child pornography online, and the max he was forced to face was 3 years.......so could they actually be promoting illegal downloading....

overall the whole case is just plan idiotic, there are probably many child rapist running around without a care in the world raping kids while people reading those child porn are getting arrested for the possibility of "if"

as a side note
didn't they also stated something like the government agents or whoever that is responsible looking out for those kinds of "crime" actually followed him from the postal office to his house, and then arrested him or something like that, what a great use of time...

This is crazy why would they give 20 years to a person with porn !!!!DRAWINGS!!!!
They are drawings plain and simple they are not actual pictures representative of anyone or anything
he could have drawn them himself if he wanted to know if they were real pics he belongs in prison
but I will say this again THEY ARE DRAWINGS 20 YEARS IS TO MUCH
anyway how did they even find out this guy had this manga was he reading it out in the open or something

The answer is simple. Here in the US, as well as many, many other countries, people think they have the right to butt into other people's private business. Such as, the "marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman!" crowd of rednecks. Some customs inspector felt it important to open this guys package at the border, and low and behold, there were "obscene" drawings in the book this guy bought! So, being the nosy little fucks they are, they sealed the package back up and called the "obscene drawing police" (read the postal cops) and the "real cops" in his city. When he picked up his package they followed him and took him down like the dirty crook he is! Sure, they COULD have been out busting a rapist, or someone who fondles real live little children (priests, for instance), or a mugger. But no, they needed to spend manpower taking down a guy with some drawings some puritanical christian nutjob didn't like.

Full disclosure: Anyone who likes to look at drawings of little people is sick and needs help. But in no sane scenario are they criminals. People who like to take pictures of or touch real live little people are sick AND are criminals and should go to jail. There is an important distinction here.

Not republican, but Republic.... Republican is one of the major political parties in the states.

On topic. I'm of the opinion, that what you see on the news and in movies is a lot worse than some drawn child porn. If it was real child porn and not drawings, then I would have a problem with it. As is, nothing more than overkill.

Hey, check this pic out. Couldn't it be considered child porn??? Shame on those preachers.....

Another sad thing is that, to my understanding, the characters in the manga were all over 18, but because they LOOK under 18 due to the drawing style, they consider it child porn. These people could walk into their nearest Borders and easily find yaoi manga that have characters looking under 18. God help us if these people went to a convention (or ebay) and saw doujinshi.

The only thing deciding the oucome of the case at this point is whether or not they can prove that the manga in question have artistic, moral, etc. value. In Japan I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem, but in America...

I'm sure that as the freedom country, the average American outlook on cultural differences will be less linear, if the average American can tell the difference between a crime and a cultural taboo!

This is simple really. If you get off to kids you are sick in the head. I don't care if they are real or just drawings, if you get off to them you are sick, and are in need of help. Society shouldn't have to deal with you.

However nothing in the article said the fake characters were kids. Let's not jump to conclusions.

'The government alleges that the material includes drawings that they claim appear to be depictions of minors engaging in sexual conduct.' sounds like lolicon to me.

but drawing is not reality -- this is a serious issue... No kids were raped to make the manga, the drawings don't come from real life but fantasy... lolicons & hentai aren't my thing, but I wish the law would focus on the real crimes of rape etc.

Out of all the obsen thing you can buy legaly the US goverment is chosing to pick on one person for owning somthing of a questionable moral and legal quality. If they want to arrest him for that then I then it is not weird to think that in the future every person that subcribes to a bondage magazine or any other sort of X rated content could be serched a procicuted for the things they own. Just thinking about that with the stash of things that i own gives me goose bumps. Though i do not have anything child related as long as he is not looking at the real images or pictures and because he has such a wide variety of other things i think this whole case is just politacal correctness and some peoples prudich thoughts gettign in the way of genral freedom

Apparently it's yaoi shota, actually. Little boys instead of little girls.

Funny thing with that is, that's a demographic mostly aimed at women. Well.... sort of funny, anyway. Then again, you don't see police bursting in and waving their guns around every time they discover a woman's secret stash.
