I'm sorry but straight is the only way to go? How can you accept pleasure from the same sex?

Ok...I guess I will be the first to say. I am a gay man. If I had to guess, I am a bit older then many of you folks at 22. I have known I was gay since grade 3, so its been essentially forever. I find many of the comments a bit disheartening but unfortunitly I am too used to it. I can not speak for the entire community, but if any of you are truly interested in the issues LGBTTI2QQ people face then I can try to help. I am involved in the queer groups at my university and the Queer Asian Youth group here.

I see a lot of talk about being feminine and other stereotypes. So I will say here, your sexual orientation does NOT define you. Being gay defines me as much as being straight defines you. It does not dictate who you are, what you do, how you act, none of it!! Some just so happen to fit some of the stereotypes, and thats ok too (as long as they are doing it because it is something they choose and not because they feel its something they feel they have to do...something that peeves me).

I do want to clear up a few things for those that want to post on this forum. Just to make the language a bit more positive.

1) "Queer" is used by many groups these days as a general umbrella term to talk about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered. Some people still find this word offensive, but thats usually** people in their mid 30's and older. They grew up with it being a very derogatory term. But overall, it is usually** (and I used that word with that note of caution) safe.

2) If you are going to talk about Trans issues, "transgendered" is the umbrella term to use. It covers essentially all the gender fluidity terms. So if you ever find yourself talking about a trans individual, just say transgendered and you will probably never offend anyone (....unless they are not trans in the first place).

3) NOT everyone has to be able to label themselves into any of these terms. ONLY the individual can decide IF a label suits them. Nobody can choose for you.

Just to broden your minds a bit. Sexuality for many is fluid, it can change through time. For some, it changes little, but that does not mean it is the same for everyone. Gender for many is not precise as well. No matter how you may be born, some may identify with being male, female, both or none. It might be strange concept to you but is reality for others.

Some issues to think about;

a) How often do you assume people are of a certain sexual orientation?
ie If you see a girl talking about going out on a date, how many of you assume it is with a man?

b) How often have you used or heard used phrases like "thats so gay", which is usually synonymous for words like stupid. I can tell you, it is a very hurtful derogatory statement that I hear all the time.

c) If you do not identify with the gender you are born as, how do you do things like choose which bathrooms to use?
Hence why there is a push for gender neutral stalls. ie rooms with just toilet and sink that anyone can use.

Most importantly, unlike visible minority groups like religion and ethnicity, you can not necessarily easily find others like you (especially depending on the country). Visible minorities have at least their family to share with, to trust in. Even if you are not close to them, they are the same as you (assuming you are biologically related) and thus they likely know where you are coming from. But we are an invisible minority. It can be very hard to find anyone like you. You also can not necessarily count on your own family to understand you. Can you imagine growing up with a secret so grave that your own parents may kick you out of the house, they may even disown you. This is a bit extreme but is unfortunitly very real for many. Look at the rates of homeless, theres is a huge disproportion that are queer. As such, the suicidal rates are much higher as well. (That being said, I know very well there will be people reading this that think thats what we deserve).

I have talked to and worked with many minorities that are discriminated against. The impoverished, people with HIV, various drug users (especially injection drug users) and sex workers are among them. If you actually take the time to talk and get to know these people, to work with them, you realize that we are the same. We all want to be happy and to be able to live our lives the way we choose. To be able to live with out fear from the society around us is a basic human right. Fear from not only physical abuse, but mental, psychological and spiritual abuse. There is also a fear of lack of access to resources like social assistance, or the loss of opportunities, like to scholarships, jobs and careers. It is fear we will lose our families and those we love because of who we are. This is something that not only hurts a few, but in truth hurts society as a whole. All forms of discrimination hurt everyone, not just the ones being targeted because it makes it a more hostile place for everyone. I urge everyone to at least think about some of the issues I have raised.

I know you said that you were just curious about who was gay, lesbian etc, but do realize that you are asking people to reveal what might be the biggest secret in their lives. No one likes to be harassed and attacked, not even if its anonymous and online.

I am straight and I find it laughable how people can justify how being homo is normal. I wont be afraid to say but I am homophobic. I dont have any friends who is gay and if I find out any of them is gay I will stop hanging around them. I wont talk shit to gays in front of their face but I def will curse them out in my mind and if my friends talk bad about them I join in the convo.
