Michiko to Hatchin, it's a new anime that recently came out, it takes place in Central south America, Michiko is African and the main character though her daughter, Hatchin is fair skined, many of the characters are of some African decent, therefore African American or Latin American would describe the characters. I've heard of a manga with a black man as the main character, his name is swordfish and he's the ringleader of an American prison, granted it's hard core Yaoi so It's probably not to most people's liking, Kyou Kara Maou! did have an African American guy but he was a side character known for raising the souls of the two main characters and delivering them to their births, I think you'd be hard pressed to find African awareness in most asian media because fair skin has always been culturally coveted, also, most foreign interest in Japan would be concerning wealthy nations and wealthy businessmen/women, most of which have caucasian or Asian background, I've seen a decent amount of Arabic influence in various medias but I think that African awareness may be heightened slightly due to the recent election of Mr. Obama in the U.S., his support is also well aclaimed on an international level, perhaps it will become a light trend over the next couple years to include more African-based characters. I still highly doubt that there will be a major switch. Japanese media is made for the Japanese, they tend to be fairer in skin and darker skined Japanese are often the over-tanned bleach-haired Yankees, a far cry from the respectable image desired by the general population, the main thing is that anime is made to sell, and the media has been developed to incorporate light skin as the fashion of choice, to change that image would cost to much and limit short run sales in an already stagnative internal economy for too little value in a culture that isn't multicultural like that of the Americas. It's not a matter of racism it's a matter of sales maximization.

Your write up is good. Sadly this can apply to American media as well (North and South). Note that in some South American/Puerto Rican/ Cuban television, characters tend to favor more European descent rather than Native American or African.

There's a whole movement with some artist to change this... ANYWAY

Mitchko to Hatchin (Brazil - which also has a Japanese Population), is an anime, short of Afro Samurai or Boondocks that has so many characters that appear to have African descent.
Another anime that had key characters that appear to have African origin was Eureka 7 (I didn't see anyone post that entry..yet)

The entry here, though not perfect gives an idea of Brazil

And there was a similar post to this one, but months ago...

Have you ever noticed that you never see a black MAIN charterer?

I don't mean this to sound racist, but I have only found ONE Manga ever to star a black person.

I was just thinking about this.. are there many?? Or do I just not know of any?
(it was under grand hotel)

<sorry i hope this isn't a duplicate>

i noticed this a long time ago, but i didn't care at since i found some anime's with black side-characters you get to see in every episode. im okay with it. but most of the time, they don't really look right in certain anime styles i've seen soo many examples..
