Do You Like(or Judge) the Game Character(s) for their looks???
Posted 12/25/08 , edited 1/1/09
After some intensive research on game characters and peoples' favourite game character(s) and also some shocking replies of some certain notable game character(s) were refering as ugly looking !There was one thing I found rather disturbing,if not obvious, was most of the game characters mentioned were "good-looking", not to mention Bishounen and Bishōjo.Anyways for a person like me,I don't really judge the
chracter(s) by their "looks", take Auron as an example -One of my favourite characters- He not really "good-looking" but what I like about him is that he's not like any other game character I've seen, with a calm mind and not a "bad ass" attitude.
Another example is Solid Snake -Yet,one of my favourite characters- not really pretty to look at, (esp.his hair style) but he has alot in character and a very unorthodox style in person.

That ends on what I think about Game Characters, I'll extend this forum in the future to make more understandable.

So what do you think..?

Please reply back on your point of view.

I admit that I do judge a character by their looks. However, I notice that as I get used to the character, and get to know them, I gain respect for them; especially the characters from Final Fantasy X.

Auron can be judged as a guy with a big sword in a funny looking coat by a non-anime/non-game playing person. I think that he is awesome and is a mentor with his wisdom and experience having enriched the game for me.

The game X-blades http://www.x-blades.com/ is one I can't take seriously and won't be playing (unless it gets some shockingly high reviews) due to the gaudiness of the character.

One the other hand, Onechanbara http://www.d3publisher.us/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=58 is a game I am interested in and look forward to playing because of the appearance of the characters.

on rpgs i like the main character to look good

Well actually all the game characters ("good fellows") look like supermodels because people don`t wanna play as good but ugly person. That`s why I hate video games in that case. I want people look real wtf.
Whatz the deal with BloodRayne? She wears latex in 30's (!!!) and has red hair there as well. She jumps with high heels and her costume is ANTI-comfortable. And also she looks like a porno model. That`s why this game is so popular becoz actually it`s shite but some 14 - year old boys love Rayne: "She has so big boobs!"

I like it when characters look good to me, obviously. However, I do not choose my favorite characters based on their looks. The looks might make me pay slightly more attention to that character than the others for a little bit (if that character is particularly attractive in my opinion, so far this has only been the case with Kratos from Tales of Symphonia) - so I can take in the personality and judge his or her decisions. A character whose personality I decide I do not like will be ignored, regardless of looks. One who I decide I am indifferent to I will stop analyzing.
Take Jade from Tales of the Abyss - I do not find him attractive. I don't like blonde hair - and he's meant to look, if anything, slightly unattractive (his clothes). Yet he is my second favorite fictional person - thanks to his personality.
I agree with what's been said about Auron as well.

to me I play with what ever I'm in the mood to play with.. soul caliber would be: taki, maxi, or ivy, which are all very attractive, though it's that I just like their style of play. my ff7 team was yuffie, vincent, and cloud, they looked the coolest to me, but then I liked all the other characters in that game too, those where just the ones 10+ lv over everyone else...

in final fantasy tactics I would use female samurai, and male ninja, because I didn't like to color red at the time, and those were the ones colored blue...

all in all, it doesn't matter as long as it's fun, right? So just do whatever you want.

Yes, I judge characters based on looks. If they look badass, they'd better be rippin shit up. If they look heroic, I expect epic moments! If they look like a femme fatale, I imagine they'll be gracefully and mercilessly killing their enemies. If they're cute, I think they'll have some cute lines and animations!

It depends. Some games I judge based on looks, some I don't. When I was playing Enchanted Arms for the Xbox360, there was a gay guy in the game who was a character and he liked another guy in the party. I couldn't tolerate him, but since he was the healer, I guess I had no choice but to like him lol. I usually don't judge looks on World of Warcraft, most of the end game gear that give awesome stats usually don't look too appealing as the gear that give horrible stats for lower levels. So it usually depends, it goes 50/50 for me.
I mean look at this: This is the gay guy from Enchanted Arms.

Now look at the gear from World of Warcraft, the first pic is the level 60 Epics and the second one is the level 70 Epics...:

We clearly know which one looks better.

Hehehehe. The level 60 Epics doesn't look half bad but looks more like the undead.

Anyways,it has become BIG issue when judging game characters from their looks.I mean, I get rejected numerous times in numerous(guild, party, etc) online games because of the looks of my character I created .
But really I Don't judge a game character from their looks.

It adds to their appeal, and how far you get absorbed in the game.

If the main protagonist is a skinny, lanky, scared little dog of a character then I think less of him, *mostly the scared bit*. It won't prevent me from liking or disliking the characters fully but it adds to it.

I analyze the crap out of game characters nowadays along with the rest of the game from a technical and artistic point of view.

Attention to detail is everything.
