hind,

sorry, but you did not fully grasp my point. i understand your logic that one can go to another site and watch an anime for free, in a sense, as a consumer. what you are forgetting is that you must also consider the costs that allow one to access the internet in the first place. in the end, no matter how anyone looks at it, the concept of free is impossible when it can be broken down with the phrase, "time is money."

those other sites that one can go to to watch anime for free is only made possible because of a sufficient amount of revenue. one way to balance the costs of maintaining a website and offering stuff for free is through hosting advertisements.

some sites, such as hulu.com, are given access by Viz Media for their anime videos after a week of release. as for the other sites that are ripping them off without permission are somewhat committing a crime. One objective of the partnership is to combat online piracy.

Anime News Network

“Crunchyroll's goal has been to provide a fully legitimate viewing platform so that anime fans can access the most popular titles in a timely manner from Japan via an authorized outlet. We are redesigningthe site to ensure that all professionally-produced content is approved by licensors. This partnership with TV TOKYO, Shueisha and Pierrot is great validation for online distribution”, said Kun Gao, CEO of Crunchyroll. “By providing more viewing options to fans and closing the release gap with domestic broadcast in Japan, Crunchyroll helps fans satisfy their craving for the latest anime while supporting rights holders' efforts to monetize their content. This is a very exciting time to be an anime fan!”

it will never be perfect. the internet is meant to be open and thus it is difficult to patrol everything and everyone. for example, music can still be stolen online despite the efforts of the record industries with things like DRM/encryption. CR and their new partnerships are doing the best they can to make things legit.

This site used to be good for finding more obscure titles, but now it looks like my search is going t become somewhat less secure.

Shinji:

You are doing a great job. Keep it up. You don't have it easy and, as it appears from the comments I've been reading, some detractors. I am, however, a fan. Thank you for all that you do and what you put up with.

To the rest of you:

I am a female moderator (ahem... - in reference to one of the previous postings) for one of the groups and want to give some of you who are merely complaining about your having to pay a major history lesson. This will tell you how old I really am:

In the US, on every single VHS, every single DVD and Blue Ray disc movie you see, the very first frame is the same - a legal disclaimer titled "Warning." If you read the fine print, it is based on a US Supreme Court decision in 1976, that took effect in 1977 (before many of you were born), that allows all of us to see movies in the privacy of our own homes without having to pay the obscene amounts to go to the theatres (now, if you want to complain about monetary conspiracies look at the major movie producers!) - provided that we don't sell the product for profit. That decision is a major reason, along with the resistance of George Lucas, the classic movie trilogy (it was three before it became six) "Star Wars" took nearly 20 years to come out on VHS/DVD. Interpol joined in on this one so that piracy, a major concern at that time, could be reduced if not eliminated (a lot of good that did). That particular decision began to include music as MTV was started and took off in the 1980's. The internet gradually became a household tool so fast that the laws weren't able to keep up. (Yes, there WAS life before the internet...)

Example: Napster...they started off as free downloads with music but the "big guns" of the industry wouldn't have any of it. Then Napster had to charge a fee. Why? The claim was made was that the artists/producers were being ripped off each time a download was being made for their creative material. And, they won. A recent case in my home state of Minnesota should prove to all of you the price of free - a single mom from here got fined by one of the major record producers for loading her tunes on a site for free - to the tune of nearly 10,000 USD. Fair? Of course not. But, it is reality. The big companies have the clout. The little guy? None. Movies and anime are, I am sure, looking at what happened to Napster and are fighting back, if they haven't started already.

What Shinji is doing is working with the producers, the agencies and the media types to allow us to see anime without running afoul of the laws of each nation, the US in particular, while being fair to the creators of the anime/manga we love. Doesn't mean it is the best arrangement nor does it mean it will last. However, it is an arrangement that, like it or not, will allow us to be able to see anime in it's best form - fresh from the source in Japan and translated. For those of you who have taken a look at Viz Media's site for Naruto/Naruto Shippuden (which includes One Piece, Zach Bell and others), as an example, you will see the power in action. Very poor quality translations but a very flashy site. And...it is free. The Dattebayo group, in its announcement of it ceasing the subbing of Naruto, mentions the power of the larger companies such as Viz Media. It saw the writing on the wall; that they would be asked to stop translating despite its popularity with us fans. Dattebayo just didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with contracts, etc. They did what they did what they did because they enjoyed it - and it showed in the quality of the subbing work they produced. Once it became legal (Viz Media asking them to stop their activities), they didn't think the fun would last. What I predict will happen is one or both of the following: Viz Media, once it gets its act together (including what it is going to do with Shippuden in the US: english or internet feed), will start filing lawsuits and force the shut down of the free and private postings on IMEEM, Veoh, Truveo, etc. The second? Those sites (although they do now but don't actively enforce very rigidly) may start banning this material from being posted because of the legal issues. I could be wrong about all of this, but...based on what I have seen in the past on other medium, it wouldn't be the first time.

For those of you wanting freebies, you can do what you wish and take your viewing elsewhere. That is your right as a consumer (at least in the US). Don't slam Shinji for wanting to make money at this venture. However, based on history, "free" in the area of copyright laws, does come at a price. You can slam me all you want by saying I don't know what I am saying..and that I am an "old fart." But, because I am an "old fart," this isn't the first time I've seen this happen. I promise you, it won't be the last.

While I understand your reasoning (now that I have finally found this post XD) I'm disappointed that we have lost access to the classic/older, less hyped animes. Will they ever come back?

Just because you can find it now for free, doesn't mean it will always be. That is my point.

I don't know what will happen for non-english translated versions but I know that there are laws in those countries about that. I only know what is happening and what has happened in the past. Just opening YOUR eyes...and, yes, "free" comes at a price, and not necessarily monetarily.

Let Shinji do what he wishes. It is your choice as to whether or not you choose to select his offering. If you think you can find it for free according to your definition, go for it. Just be warned, at some point, it won't be...

People like you are why there are illegal downloads - clueless and looking for a better deal. I'd prefer to support legal downloads and, if I have to pay for that, so be it. Websites such as Naruto Central support this position as well. If you wish to support illegal downloading, go for it.

As far as my "boring speech," you could have chosen to ignore it and moved on if you found it to be so "boring." You read it and since you replied, something in my so-called "boring speech" must have struck a nerve. Bringing issues such as racism into a discussion on illegal downloading is disgusting, as was my reading about sexism being implied in some of the posts, which also indicate that a nerve was struck. So, if you really find things boring, ignore them and move on. If my memory is correct, forums are for everyone to express opinions, boring or not.

End of subject...and I hope it will be the last I will hear from you.
