Because its funny and I always get excited when they do a reference from another anime I know which one it is. Its also the reason I decided to give comedies another chance since I normally don't watch comedies. But Gintama is still the best comedy so far.
I actually don't watch Gintama...
I saw the 1st episode it's not fun..no offense..
I know this is said a lot, but it does start off rather slow trying to introduce you to the characters and Gintama universe. I would suggest skipping to around episode 16-20 and starting from there.

I know a few who were discouraged by the first few episodes but I told them that all you have to know is the characters and understand the style of the comedy. So I kept showing them different episodes and they sure laugh out loud.
The first episode doesn't even introduce the characters one by one, they just threw you into the middle of the gist of the anime.
The production company basically expected you to know what Gintama is all about.
They had a Jump special episode in 2005 that basically introduced all the character. It was very funny and they actualy redid that same show years after. The delivery of the same lines by the seiyuu were a lot different. It was fun to watch. A lot of improvisation happens in this anime.
Gintama is not for everyone and not everybody gets the comedy but I know a lot of Japanese anime fans do.
This anime is on the 5th year and the manga is still on going. That tells a lot.
Ohh really? Then I shall watch it!!!
I'll try to keep on watching it and see if it's funOhh really? Then I shall watch it!!!
