When it comes to rhythmic gaming in general, the entire concept is essentially the exact same: "To hit notes in sync with music". However with that being said, each game is unique whether it be Rock Band, Guitar Hero, DDR, Stepmania, O2Jam, etc. Because the concept is essentially the same, the skill needed to correctly and skillfully play a rhythm game well comes from only experience.

For example, a person that has played any sort of rhythm game mentioned above would typically have absolutely no problem adjusting to a different rhythm game. Speaking from personal experience, as a Stepmania and ITG player, I had absolutely no trouble learning and playing Guitar Hero from the moment I picked up a controller. However, I did not play the game long enough to become skilled in it but the fact that I was able to pick up the game in a matter of minutes would be quite impressive compared to others who have never played a single rhythm game in their life. Rhythm game skills are transferable between different rhythm games, no matter how different the game. I, who played Stepmania Singles which consists of 4-keys for nearly 3 years, managed to quickly adjust to Guitar Hero/Rock Band which involve 5-keys as well as Stepmania Solo which consists of 6-keys. Countless others have done the exact same without any wasted effort therefore this all comes down to rhythm game skill and how quickly you can adapt. It's infinitely easier for someone with rhythm game experience and skill to adapt as compared to someone without it.
