But anyway, yea I agree with your opinon topic creator. It's kind of hard to find a true rpg sometimes now. At least though some are still all around good, like Persona 3 and 4.

I think I encountered this question already... Not on this site though... But I agree with what you see right now... "Today people are mistaking action/adventure games as RPG's."... But there are still REAL RPGs that are cool, some are also new... But I also encountered lotsa new games that were actually action/adventure games but were called RPG... The games were good and cool though, but it is in the wrong section...

an rpg is heaven it is the story that we put ourselves in for hours and dream of adventure and far away lands it is an awesome battle system

go look up Bethesda Softworks. they have made a number of good rpgs

Well there are three kinds these days. Real RPG's, console RPG's, and MMO's.

Final Fantasy and it's ilk are console RPG's. Basically you make no real decisions regarding the story or plot. Your characters level up but you typically have little control over the "details" of how they advance. They get new gear, etc etc. They are more like really long somewhat interactive movies.

Games like Fable, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 stay pretty close to what a real RPG is. You make and in some cases name your character. There is a strict story but you don't "have" to follow it, and your decisions in game at least impact things a little. You also have direct control over how your character improves such as being able to learn rogue type skills or not based on your preference. You still have all the other stuff too though. These games are less about interactive movies and more about interactive worlds.

MMO's I wont go into because outside of character advancement that have lost most of the elements that made them RPG's thanks to the players. It is hard to take a game seriously as an RPG when the story is loose at best, you have no real decisions other than class and character skills, and you cant go to town without hearing a Chuck Norris joke.

It is sort of sad these days that so many kids have no clue what RPG's are really about and think Final Fantasy is the king. RPG's were invented in America, not Japan. The best way to enjoy them is and always will be with 5-6 friends around your dinner table with some dice, a few rule books, and your imagination.

Now I can agree with that, I am also happy you understand where RPG's came from and what a real rpg is. Not very often I find a person who seems to know that.

Man, I love the idea~ It's my fave genre for games!

Since some people posted here I will throw out that the new rpg Dragon Age:Origins just came out for PC 360 and PS3 and so far it is actually very good. If you liked the old baldurs gate games or the more recent Neverwinter Nights this game is basically just like them only more refined and vastly improved in a number of ways. Also it finally breaks the D&D mold and follows a ruleset made specifically for the game by bioware.

I love RPG's, but so far I haven't seen any really good ones since I played FF9. Best game EVER!
