why are bf's so protective over their girl?

On a more serious front, it is a set gender role set by the patriarchal society we live in. In fact in many ways it benefits men in general to be seen as the protectors and providers in the relationship because it allows them to control the relationship. A prime example of this can be found in the book that it seems just about every teenage girl has read Twillight. It is apparent the edward controls the relationship while bella is the helpless and rather stupid heroine who is in constant need to be saved do to the fact she is a weak because she is female.
