Depends on how you define 'protective of their girl'.

When it comes to safety and wellbeing, I'm very protective.

However, I couldn't care less about other guys interacting with my girl...I feel no threat and I don't worry about cheating, ever. In fact, I encourage my girl to spend more time with her friends, dress sexy and go out, etc...

idk why ... my boyfriend doesn't even want me to talk to his friend (who hooked us up together).

it's kinda weird. BUT i see his friend's point that my bf might get jealous and not be his friend anymore.

What a surprise, another thread generalizing an entire gender and promoting segregation. To answer your question simply, it depends on the person.

In this society today where flirtation instantly leads to cheating, I don't blame most guys for being protective.

testosterone makes guys territorial and stuff fueling stupid fights among guys constantly. Because guys are this way ,we protect what we feel is ours/ this usually signifies an emotional attachment to someone in some guys mind.

Some guys can't handle emotional stress, and what's more of a stressor than finding your girl cheating on you.

I think it's cute when the guy feels like protecting his girlfriend!

What's really bad is when the guy hides behind you even when you're half his size

Um because she IS his girl.

Why wouldn't you protect someone you care about?

It could be out of many things. ^^

Like, jealousy? If the girls a good catch, of course he'd want to keep her. ^^ Not just looks but personality. He wouldn't want anyone taking her away now... xD Or out of love, protecting a girl could make them feel very wanted and valued as a significant other ^^.
But there are times where it's purely just posessiveness, just because she belongs to him or something weird, people can get overposessive and thats creepy... But I wouldn't blame them if someone else tried getting with his girl, you know?

But again, try reversing it for the girls out there. For me, I'm an overly paranoid person so I tend to go ape if my boyfriend were talking with another girl. xD Infact, true story. I went mad on my best friend because she wanted to add my boyfriend on MSN. But thats not the point... Kind of. In my case I really am committed so I would be jealous (a little jealousy shows a healthy relationship in my opinion, because ot's like showing that you'd be bothered if there was a miniscule chance of him running off with some other girl, you know? It's the same if you reverse the situation ^^) And I also really care for his feelings, my feelings and the relationship!

My main point is that girls can be just as protective as guys are with their respective partners. ^^ I rambled too much about myself ): -Headdesk- but theres a point in there! somewhere. >__< I can't answer as a guy so I reversed the situation and answered as a girl? ): xD
