In psychology there exists Thanatos, the death drive, do you believe that humans really subconsciously wish for death? Or Eros the desire to create Life that opposes the death drive.

To speak of the psychology of humans collectively would be unwise; when it comes to the human mind, many variations that can still be considered "normal" are possible. There are certainly many people who are aggressive and/or engage in potentially self-destructive behavior, but this is neither the case for everyone nor necessarily a subconscious wish for death. Such expression may only indicate a need to break out of a daily routine, to feel the thrill of approaching death but not reaching it, to get attention, etc. Similarly, not everyone has a desire to create life. By the way, I'm not sure they genuinely oppose each other...

I think Freud was a little too caught up in his own paradigm, what with all his dramatizing and even mystifying of human psychology and experience.

We do. But at the same time we fear it. PARADOXXXX OOOOO I JUST DESTROYED THE UNIVERSE.

But seriously, if people were given eternal life, and the only way for them to possibly die was suicide, we would all some day kill ourselves. If it just be out of sheer BOREDOM.

Yeah um no. If i had immortality i would exist till the end of fkn time and what ever came next i would be there to see.

Personally i dont ever want to die. Now i have wished others would die but thats somthing totaly different. Who ever came up with that we all really want to die shit is retarded.

I thought the death drive is a result of not having a strong eros, so if your not making love you are likely making war. Though society could be a factor in shaping how strong the death drive or eros is.

Man: "You know, they say sex and murder are the only two true pleasures left to man."

Woman: "Oh yea? And...which one of those do you need me for?"

Man: "Both."

I think this is the best answer to the OP's question.

I think the "death drive" is like the equivalent of "every action has an equal and opposite reaction: or something. Every moment of our lives is spent continuing our existence, so wanting to die is like exhaling. I don't think its a genuine desire to end your own life, but to give perspective on the meaning of life or your own existence. Occasionally you just need to do something else so you don't feel like a worker ant.
I think there is also an element of simple curiosity...maybe death is awesome and wonderful... nobody knows.

what?
Posted 1/20/09
of course everything has its counterpart..

like light is to dark
good is to evil
etc..

if thanatos, the death drive, is present.
i believe that eros, life, is there with it.

i think one cannot act without the other.

Freud is overrated.
Posted 1/20/09
This is counter-balance to survival instinct which is
emphasized in suicidal and apathetic people.
Their worldview has different picture of life and existence then average person: namely that its lacks purpose or meaning or otherwise unbearable. Thanatos is manifestation of this emotional perception and its present in some form in all people.
