I must say when I first came on to watch episode 91 having pre-ordered an Anime Membership, it wouldn't load. There were a stream of commenters underneath it also claiming they couldn't load the video. I checked Shippuuden episode 01 and that too wouldn't load (comments were posted their as well.) This was around 6pm EST, meaning about 12 hours since the show launched (I figured it might lull a bit at launch, can't underestimate Naruto fans) ... 3 hours later I sent out an e-mail in complaint, the response basically said "what are you talking about, it's working" ... went to check, maybe 20 minutes since I last did, and it was... but it was lagging a bit. (Note: 2.16Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, latest ver. of flash)

I did cancel my renewal, for now, because if this is the quality I can expect in the coming months, I don't want to be a part of it (I don't mean this as an insult, rather, I hope it helps build motivation for improvement.) In retrospect I wish I hadn't purchased it, or could get a refund (I was denied one, however.) I've turned a lot of my anime watching friends on to crunchyroll over the years over torrenting to save space/time, but definitely would not recommend an Anime Membership to them yet.

I like the positivity and all, but I don't think CR is moving towards a solution quickly enough. Come on, it's been close to 24 hours! A massive portion of the feedback to the new streams has been negative. Negative as in, "I paid freakin' money and it doesn't freakin' work!" They should have reverted to the old stream format. Slide the new format in after they do extensive testing, properly notify subscribers and already have at least one stinkin' week of successful simulcasting... make that a month.
The new stream is useless for many users, I doubt that it'll prevent pirating as I have been told that it can still be ripped, and apparently already has been.

First start of January all the shows disappear (i understand and exptected it, but it still pissed people off), then the first week of simulcasting they treat all their new paying subscribers like guinea pigs and switch the streams to something which I'm sure somebody at CR had to realize would be a problem for allot of users, and to top it off they don't warn anybody. It's a customer relations disaster straight up.

I really don't know what to say. I paid for a year subscription thinking this was going to be executed properly, boy do I feel stupid. I'm going to attempt and ask for a refund but I have a feeling I'll be met on deaf ears.

Some suggestions...

> Karaoke Subtitles for opening/ending.
> Working 720p that IS 720p and isn't blatantly 480p stretched/re-encoded.
> Working streams. I'm on 10mbps and the video is randomly stopping and I'm getting hiccups. This is ridiculous.
> Subs sometimes don't sync with the video.
> Subs that aren't Americanized.

I honestly feel ripped off at the moment. I hope CR can get things fixed. I really do. I'm going to go watch DB's sub of 91 and then pray.

Hmm.

I've read this thread with great interest. As Dattebayo have now dropped Shippuuden, I thought that if I wanted to watch Shippuuden legitimately, CrunchyRoll was my destination. Yeah, I signed up. Yeah, my scripts blocked all the blatant advertising. I see that CrunchyRoll is having a few problems, yet I was impressed by the quality of the 480/720 HD streams that CrunchyRoll offered, and I was on the verge of putting myself down for a month...but several things stopped me.

CrunchyRoll expect me to watch the stream...and that's it. It doesn't look like I am allowed to download it to my hard drive. Very iTunes-esque. I see that there are already cumbersome efforts afoot to DRM the hell out of the streams as well, but perhaps the most troubling aspect is the bandwidth issue. CrunchyRoll requires more bandwidth; not just for this initial influx of new visitors (who, I might add, are here half-heartedly; who else came here because they didn't want to feel like a thief?), but for the future it envisions.

CrunchyRoll is putting out all the stops because it badly needs a successful launch to get enough capital to begin upgrades. Make no illusions, it took me 2 minutes of navigation to realise that CrunchyRoll is bootstrapping their way through this; desperately trying to make things happen so that everything goes smoothly. For one thing, they said that they use Nero to encode the episodes. I wonder what the royalties for that would be, for each and every episode they encode? More money. Bandwidth and server upgrades? More money. Contract negotiations (WTF are these guys the new ADV?). More money. I could go on and on and on.

I will lurk for the next 2-3 weeks to see how things progress, but I can not and will not pay money for this service at this stage. There's no FAQ, there's no depth to the lineup, there's no bandwidth. You have an idea, and I hope you can make it work. But I doubt I will put money down for a service that enforces strict DRM on their streams. I don't want to pay for the "moment", I want to pay for the "product"...that's not...criminal, right?

Bye for now.

I have to agree with lorddarkshade here, in some regards.

The promised 720p quality (it's out there on the torrents in higher 1080p, but not even proper 720p here?)

Less hiccups on the streams (you know, dattebayo claims they once had over a million downloads on one torrent and so far this is JUST the people with Anime Memberships, what happens next week? Also, I have to take back what I said earlier about "less lag" as I tried to actually watch it and couldn't get past the OP.)

Syncing on my end has seemed okay, when it doesn't hiccup (these are probably related.)

As for the "Americanized subs," well, this is being done in collation with Naruto.com too, right? (I'm assuming the fact that both crunchyroll and Naruto.com / hulu are going to post the SD versions on the 15th is proof of this) So of course they're not going to sub the OP / ED or go for proper Japanese honorifics (they never have before) ... though it pained me to see "Mr. Gamariki, "Pervy Sage," and "Kakashi Sensei."

My biggest complaint so far is that dattebayo said that they were going to stop subbing because crunchyroll/Naruto.com was finally going to offer the quality they were providing... but this is not even close to what dattebayo did! (And I understand part of the reason they quit was because they were tired of subbing Naruto, and that's their right, of course.)

A question: Have you read the complaints on the Naruto Shippuuden page / the episode 91 page? This is bigger than this thread. You might consider giving everybody a free month for putting up with this... it might appease the masses ... for now.

Edit: seems as though ShizuGroove beat me to the punch with some better points than I made (though isn't iTunes-esque unfair in terms of the downloading issue? At least when you pay there it's yours, DRM or not.)
