i wouldn't recommend using those "How to Draw Manga/Anime" books. their examples are really stiff and boring. i just read a bunch of manga and practice with reference.

Well, sometimes I have my difficulties too and those times I use references...If I have an idea in mind but don't really know how to draw it, I search for a picture that is identic...Sometimes it's a photo sometimes and artbook scan...etc...

I don't copy the whole pic but it can be very helpful to copy one or the other item - like the pose, the folding of the cloths, how the leg stands in certain poses...etc...

I guess if ur good at 'duplicating' than u should try to change the pics u copy a bit...That way u'll practice drawing and creating OCs at the same time...You can began with small changes like eyes, hair etc and later continue with clothes, poses...I think after a while u'll be able to come up easily with own ideas too^^

Just keep on practicing!!

And another tipp : try to find styles that suit your skills...
If u draw something that causes u a hard time and u feel like loosing joy and enthusiasm, take another paper and draw something in that suitable style...
You will cheer up after a while and can continue with ur main project relaxed and focused^^

These advices are coming from my experiences so it not neccessarly will work out for you too...So if they turn out to be useless, than sorry...

My advice:
I'll tell you this based from experience: Even just one drawing per day would help a lot
My hand would just draw what it wants (it moves itself hahah), like for example:
Sometimes I want to draw an angry boy but it would end up smiling
Also, having a mirror beside you while drawing something would be good. (Though I'm too lazy to carry one with me)

The mind is free to think of anything.
I did not need a copy to draw Eros aka Cupid here: (You can always think of making your own if you already know the basics)

Hope I helped.

I drew it just for you

I even gave it kirby cheeks.

Start with a circle, then draw a few more stubby arm/leg circles, give it a circle tummy, circle eyes, half circle ears and a windy long tail.

Damn I wish I knew how to sew, I could make awesome soft toys.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA this is where that's from?!

I need to lurk moar!

edit:

to stay on topic:

When learning to draw you need to learn basic principles of art. lighting, shadow, and that lines aren't really lines, they're differences in color.
To draw manga successfully, you need to understand all of these principles. And the most important thing is: draw everything, go back and look at what you've drawn before, notice the lines in anime and manga when you watch/read it can give you some insight on what to do and what not to do.
fyi

This is after learning the fundamentals before drawing the things i wanted to draw...

I take it you've never seen an Australian monkey before? They look just like that.
