Here is the issue. I hear sooo many people discussing what makes a good Anime. Must it have come from a good Manga first? Is it more important for it to be entertaining and pretty to look at, or is it more important to have a great deep story line? For me I just plane like Anime more than Manga, so I don't care where it comes from. I need a great story, but I don't want my Anime to look like Dragon Ball Z either...Story wise, as of late I have to give props to Death Note and Kurozuka for their deep story lines and their rich character personalities. Although I also have to hand it to Naruto and Bleach for their staying power. I feel Naruto is a bit better drawn, but Bleach has some more interesting story lines. BUT my hang up with those shows is the Manga people say is better and all those filler episodes where they do nothing is really irritating. And what's up with the five minuet recap at the beginning of each Bleach, really! Where have the Ghost in the Shells and Full Metal Alchemists gone. There have been shows that have had it all, can any of you tell me which shows today meet your expectations. Are they well written, drawn beautifully, full of great characters and action or comedy? Even the romance anime has dropped off a bit. They all follow the same format now. Harem of girls who all love the same boy who for some reason lives alone and is clueless. Remember Please Teacher, Ai Yori Aoshi, School Days? They were romance but way more interesting and fun to watch. SO YOU TELL ME...What makes the best anime and where are they???

Apart from those things you mentioned, Code Geass is a great anime in my opinion. It's got a mix of a bit everything in it. Drama, Fantasy, Romance Mecha, Psychological/Moral issues, great character and a bit of fan service.

for me what makes a good anime ... is the story of the anime .. since i'm not a manga lover so i don't care if the manga is better than the anime .. what is important to me is the story ... also i like to see handsome and cute characters ... sometimes i like to see an anime that has school life when there r two guys like the same girl ... also some action in the anime makes it good sometimes ^^

I think a truly great anime is one with an engaging and intricate plot, deep and realistic characters, and good animation. The only anime I've seen latly that employs all of these characteristics are Monster, Gangkutsuou, Gunslinger Girl, and Ergo Proxy (despite the shitty end and a few boring characters). Older anime like Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Serial Experiments also are worth noting.

While death note has an interesting plot and great animation/art I feel the characters are too shallow with the exception of Light who showed negative human traits while still being an intelligent sentient being.
Black Lagoon has great characters but a pretty standard plot. It's still a good watch though.

As for humor I like random or dry humor. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is random and dry. It has great characters and unique beautiful art, but no real plot so to speak. It's another great anime, but it can't compare to the others

something that REALLY makes you want to watch the next episode. Horror always gets me going if it scares the shit out of me.
action js has to get yr adrenaline going with vehicles, guns, swords and the attitudes of the characters even though its an anime
romance some thing about the story that makes you want to have some1 to love you or appreciate you that way and in the same scenario

i loved Ai Yori Aoshi a looott
guess its just the world out with the old and in with the new. i like to go back to the good old times and relive the moments though even if it means watching something from 2000
