Why are they called "ninjas" if they don't exclusively do ninjutsu? Why does there have to numerous jutsus: taijutsu, genjutsu, doujutsu, kinjitsu, etc. Technically, if the art of the ninja is ninjutsu, characters like Rock Lee who don't or can't really use shouldn't be deemed ninja. The art of ninjutsu historically and in other media would incorporate all these jutsus as one overall art-ninjutsu? What I also don't get is why most of the character's outfits don't match that stereotypical black, red, white, blue or other colored outfit that has the hood and mask. And why do most of the characters not use swords? Even in other and older anime, ninja's will use the sword and the outfit aforementioned.

I would have to agree with you. Most everyone on this show cannot be considered a ninja. At least by my definition. I like defining things, and I think a ninja is best defined as an extremely stealthy fighter. Many people on that show are capable of extreme stealth, but how many of them consistently use it in their fighting style?
The new addition to Faldwin's Dictionary: ninja: an extremely stealthy fighter. |

The anbu are portrayed as the more stereotypical ninja.
And the whole black cloth, stealth with a sword is from major western influence and sterotypes. In Japanese history, a ninja (忍者, ninja) is a warrior specially trained in a variety of unorthodox arts of war. These include assassination, espionage, and other martial arts. Steroetype: Heres a drawing of Jiraiya overing coming a huge snake that would prey on toads, he's using a gun: Notice the difference, one is a picture of a dude playing dress up and the other is a drawing of an actual ninja. |

Currently working on own subs with some lesser known series should be good

yeah and even though to use what he's using is a gun of sorts in reality during these times rockets or early versions of fireworks were used and were often used in battle,
the ninja your speaking of is just a gimic in actuality ninja are pretty much like the modern commando, a person whom is trained in a specific type of warfare either to gain intelligence or be a one man army, it just depends on the specific situation |

well I duno the true history of the ninja but I bet you that hollywood has totally fantasized and distorted it into some guy making strange noises and jumping around in a black suit *shrugs* I always sorta thought that naruto took the name ninja but made them into well people....

dream43 wrote: I always sorta thought that naruto took the name ninja but made them into well people.... Which is why they aren't really ninja. Ninja shouldn't be people. If they were people then they wouldn't be able to be as stealthy. That is why their face is hidden, so that no one can find out who they are and use that against them. As soon as you put on a mask you start to lost your identity, and with a ninja that can be very effective. (With superheroes it can make for endless angst) I agree with what someone said about ANBU being ninjas, they definitely qualify as extremely stealthy fighters. %Pr |

Yes they can be called ninja.

Agreed 100% I mean, if they looked like the stereotypical ninja, then the show wouldn't have been as successful. Kishimoto tweaked it and made it his own, and isn't that what one should do when coming up with an idea for a manga/anime? |

Ok, I love this series, but Naruto wears a freakin orange track suit! You CAN NOT tell me that a ninja is going to wear that! Stealth's out of the question because you're going to be seen from a mile away wearing ORANGE. That and the magical powers/jutsu and the ridiculous talking animals (which I have hated ever since they were introduced).
They're more like teen titans than ninjas to me. |

I was actually bored enough to get on here again

I don’t really know anything about ninjas....real ninjas and all that ninjitsu but I guess the creators just called them ninjas to have an explanation of what exactly they are, and to make sense to the story. After all we clearly know REAL ninja’s don’t spit out fireballs from their mouth (e.g. Sasuke) and I don’t think they wear such colourful outfits so people CAN notice them...It’s all just to ‘make sense’
