1. genres of music can't die if people listen. people still compose classical music for ex.
2. punk lost it's popularity. like back in the 80's there were a bunch of punks just hangin around
3. people nowadays don't recognize what punk is or they only know bands that are decades old (ramones, clash, misfits, etc.)
4. if there is any opposite to pop it is punk, therefor mainstream bands (bad religion, rancid, offspring, etc) might not be considered punk to many
5. having said all of that, most punks i know listen to a bunch of bands that i've never even heard of

i think music trends change just like fashion. i remember when i was in high school, most people listened to rock/pop rock music. now, everyone seems to be listening to hip hop a lot more often. punk'll probably "come back" eventually. you never know...

Pop-punk is an oxymoron, so no it's not still punk 'ish.'
It may be inspired by punk but it is a subgenre of pop and alternative music, not punk.

Punk rock isn't dead it's just past its golden age and is sadly falling into the shadows of rock music

Punk is dead. Just turn to the classics The Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, and I may be stepping out on a limb here and say Joy Division.
