i totally agree with: songs you like may not be good songs.

there are so many songs that i find really catchy (and i admit they find their way onto my mp3 player) but that i know aren't really great musically.

but anyway, most of the time, i don't even bother analyzing songs' musical merit.

my philosophy is:
if i like it, i listen to it. if it don't like it, i don't listen to it, no matter how genius it may be. (:

I agree it's a preference, it truely is.

I think all singers should write their own songs though, instead of paying someone to be more original and creative then they are. Just saying.

There's more to a song than lyrics and rhythm. There's composition, beat, harmony, pitch, etc. etc. etc.

You guys missed the point entirely. Did you even read the OP? If you consider music 'Good' just because you like it or it sounds appealing, that is being biased and not really seeing music for music. Often those uneducated in music judge music in that manner. I am trying to dispel this ignorance and provide an unbiased view of judging and viewing music. You can like music that isn't good and you can dislike music that is good. Just because you like or dislike something does not make it good or back. That's just ignorance.
That's the point of the thread.

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but if someone doesn't write their own music, has no talent, and uses cheap tricks to deceive their audience, they cannot be validly construed as 'good.'

Talent isn't a matter of opinion. It's a universal concept.

I don't think that's what we were trying to say at all, at least that's not what I meant though my post was short so it's understandable you interpreted it wrong. Lemme try to explain. Just because I don't listen to a certain genre of music doesn't mean I don't think it's good, it's just not the type I'm into. Like country for instance.. It doesn't really appeal to me and I don't enjoy listening to it, but I do think it's good music. Reason being is that from what I've had to listen to they do have good voices, they do have talent, and a good flow of music. So just because I don't listen to country doesn't mean I'm saying that it's not good.

I do love music that I know you would think is absolutely terrible. Their voices aren't great at all and the music sounds like it was thrown together quickly, but I love it. I know it wouldn't be considered 'good' based on harmony and all the others you meantioned in the first post, but I still listen to it.

And I did point that out, about not writing their own material, but you cut that out of my post.

Good music isn't a preference.

Music you like is a preference. I can like a piece of artwork that a guy simply made ONE line, and ONE line only on his piece of paper that was randomly placed. That doesn't mean it was good. Just a simple line on a piece of paper will very most likely never be good artwork, even if some people enjoy it. It's just line, that probably wasn't worked hard on too long. Things can be judged as good or bad believe it or not.

So back to the subject on "What is 'Good' Music?".

Assuming this is a band with a vocalist and etc, I believe a good piece of music needs to be complex, so the instruments should not be playing exactly what the Vocalist is doing. Even the instruments themselves should not be doing what each other are doing, or it's just bland. Bland is not good music, but can still be enjoyable to those who don't have a rat's ass of an idea of what well done music actually is. That's all I can honestly come up with right now because my criteria is locked in my head, I can understand what I'm thinking, but not in words. Oh damn my brain.
