Subtitling, Voice Dubbing, They Are All The Same For Localizing
Posted 1/9/09
I've seen anime fans that are pro-subs, anti-dubs, and believe that licensing = dubbing. Now I'm not gonna go into detail about the "licensing = dubbing" bit, except for the fact that it is wrong(http://wiki.crunchyroll.com/Licensing#What_is_Licensing.3F).

However, do understand that both English subtitling and voice dubbing in anime, are both necessary localizing processes for the English-speaking audiences to gain access on anime in Japanese, which is a foreign language for these people.

The truth is, I personally know people who like anime, but couldn't stand watching them while hearing the Japanese language, because they find the original language distracting. And as for myself, I find the English subtitle itself distracting, because it forces me to read it while I would miss out on the visual details. Therefore voice dubbing was really helpful to allow audiences like us to enjoy anime.

Once again, I'm here to address the fact that both English subtitling and voice dubbing are simply localizing processes, but together they are allowing a wide range of audiences to enjoy anime that normally won't be the case.

If anyone interested, here's the original reference I've found regarding "localization and accessibility with captioning, subtitling, dubbing, and audio description": http://joeclark.org/localiz-access.html.

I like dubs (except for 4Kids, CCS, and Sailor Moon dubs) they make me understand the story better than when I watch Japanese with English subs and I know some of the voices suck in English but you can get use to them. I'm just sick and tired of all these threads that are on here and Gaia ranting and complaining about how Ouran High School Host Club and other dubs suck why can't people just try and enjoy it D: I thought you wasn't going to get an anime membership changed your mind??

Oh when I don't have anything to say I post a random pic. Since I got over a thousands pics it felt like a waste so I decide to post them. I usually forget to put the number. You might see me do this in other threads.

I think it's rather that people consider dubbing=Americanizing, which sometimes it is (e.g. Initial D), which is also one of the reasons fans prefer fansubbing over official subs, this could also translate as "licensed manga vs. scanlated manga".

Let's face it, some companies do suck and try to make changes that they believe are for the better but instead, end up ruining the anime (e.g. Dragon Ball in it's first years), yet others do try to keep the original dialogues as much as they can. Unfortunately, they also need to cater to newcomers to anime, and that can be a bit difficult when trying to translate words or terms that are rather untranslatable or it would change the whole context (e.g. -senpai, -sama, hitsuzen), or cultural quirks (e.g. calling classmates by their last names but your girlfriend or friends by their name).
