What do you guys think about MTV2's Otaku week ~?

If you haven't checked it out on tv yet heres a link

They covered 2008 Otakon Anime convention..
Alot of critics say MTV could have brought in a more diverse group of otaku "sophisticated collectors, people who write about anime and manga professionally, academics, creators" - but instead is all about "dissing the nerds". Exploiting fans in "convention mode".

Anime fans are upset that it portrays them "nerdtastic", which some people are taking personally, "in light of MTV's track record as champions of human dignity."

Others argue it Seems to be ultimately all in good fun, though. And is actually a "surprisingly non-judgmental look at a misunderstood bunch."

Any comments on your brothers and sisters ~? x) Or how mtv is showing anime fans ~? Can you relate ~?
My favorite is Max from pokemon..that guys awesome Lol I wana b his friend >> make sure 2 watch his vid hehe

They had the guts to criticize these anime/manga enthusiast, when MTV, itself, is no longer stands for MUSIC TELEVISION. MTV supposed to be music tv. But what they do, broadcast and unleash havoc with trashy dramas... and what?!! ... a tv segment about BROMANCE.... are they stupid?!!!
Each person has its own problems and stress. He/she opens the tv, hoping that he/she would find something entertaining and relaxes his/her nerves. But, instead, what does this person sees on the tv are dramas that remind him/her about stress and problems.

the hell is that?! BAKA!!

Unfortunately, I don't have access to any of those programs from Canada, so I really can't make any honest opinion on the show alone.

However, as long as MTV don't include the historical facts about their subjects, they aren't presenting a "surprisingly non-judgmental look at a misunderstood bunch."

I have the feeling they just looked for the worst cosplays they could find and then interviewed them.

No comment on the Yu-Gi-Oh players. =\

Ok... here's the deal. I was at Otakon. I had a booth in the Vendor room promoting my book. Of all the videos up there I saw... the second one "Beautiful energy" sums up the whole experience. There were more than 26,000 attendees at Otakon. The energy was awesome.

Now I met some crazy people there, as you will if exposed to any group of 26,000 people.... but did anyone notice how much fun everyone was having? Everyone who I met was having a blast! People all have smiles on their faces, and running around having fun like the rest of the 26,000 people. There was some really good cosplay, some really bad cosplay, some obscure cosplay...etc...

I actually have a whole bunch of Otakon pictures on my website taken at the booth.

Otakon was actually held on 8-8-08...which was "Lose the Game" day... There were like 26,000 people losing the game and loving it! I just lost the game myself thinking about it.

Sure, you can try to judge MTV for what they came across, you can try to judge the people as geeks... but if you look at their faces, they were all just glad to be there and having a great time... and I really don't think there's anything negative about that.

For all the people who attended Otakon, it was a great weekend, with lots of activities, fans doing what they do, and places to chill and people watch... and I think if you watch those videos, you may crack a smile and say "what a geek," but it was obviously entertaining enough for MTV to notice... and it was even more entertaining in person.

Was it a negative depiction of conventions and Otaku? I don't think so. They're fans... watch a football game where the big fat guys take off their shirt, paint their whole body and wear a beer helmet and tell me that it isn't just as wierd... The difference here is, these people were sober.

Well, that's my take on it... and I was there... if there was anyone else at Otakon, chime in... you know you had fun too... even if you had to wait in line for 8 hours for pre reg!

P.S. - You just lost the game.

Video didn't let me watch cos I'm outside the US and I don't really understand this anyway... MTV probably did that program to purely name and shame the people that love anime so much they would cosplay as a character, to represents them in a bad way to non-anime viewers/people (e.g. think they still live with their mum, or have a crap job)

Of course if it's on MTV it's about dissing the nerds.
Ugh, it's pretty obvious that they're not the type of people who are into this stuff so they should just stay out of it.
They're going to make us all look like retards and make it look like liking anime makes you a complete loser.

.....wtf? They could've at least tried and get an interview from the better cosplayers, it seems like MTV purposefully chose people that they know others will laugh at, and God knows there some damn good cosplayers out there that don't necessarily need to be Asian.

Wow what did they fuck up this time. Last time they had anything to do with anime that I remember they aired an anime they couldn't be assed to show in order or finish showing it for that matter.

I refused to watch MTV after it became the home of annoying VJ's and shitty reality shows.
