I'm not really sure they would look less weird to the non-otaku if they did show the better cosplayers. I'm not entirely sure whether I should take offense or not. I think they are trying to show them in a negative light; but that is how they try to make it funny, and it is slightly humorous; so the question is, do we take it all in good humor or be offended? I think it is in good humor(or bad humor if you can't find it funny) so I don't think we should be offended.

ok personally that was messed up because of 2 reasons. firstly i kinda think that they were mocking them and putting that stuff out there to the public without explaning it will most likely end with people making fun of them. secondly and most important theres a very good chance that people that watch this will stereotype all anime loves to being like that and thats just messed up. i love anime im a complete anime freak but i dont collect figures or cosplay. so i think that this just hurt us alot.. idk hopefully i'm wrong

I've gone to a convention in Toronto before. Many of the cosplayers were pretty cool to talk to and stuff, but some of them were like watching a train wreck.

I'd do it again, but bring more cash.

Hmm... well, it really depends.
I can take a joke and all, but some people take things too far sometimes. It's really annoying when they portray anime/manga Otaku's as 'just geeks/nerds' and etc... because it really isn't true.

Sure, being an otaku is fun and all. It's great going to conventions, meeting other people, hanging out and etc... but there are also people who make a living out of doing things anime and manga related. It's not all just fun and games for some people. Just because it's anime and manga (or how some people see it as just cartoons and comics) that people are obsessing over, doesn't make it any more comical or crazy that a persons obsession with books or games or math or science is.

I have to check out that link...

It makes people who are into that stuff look nerdy....

THIS is where more stereotypes come from.

first of mtv sucks to begin with so why the hell were they at something awesome like otakon?
and second taping people in "convention mode" is so wrong cuz we tend to get a little out
there when we're at a con. ive seen some of the commercials for their otaku week and they
are definitely not meant all in good fun it was mtvs way of saying "Hey otaku go F*** yourselves you're lame"

they did a horrible job....MTV has to ruin everything
they (mtv america) better not touch asian music.

Interesting topic, though it's a mix bag. The TV station might have been looking to poke some fun but the process they chose wasn't the wisest one. Also I'm sure there was some backstage editing and higher ups choosing some of what would air or not.

By the way if you're still needing a way to vent back, have some fun with what Anime Source is doing!

http://www.anime-source.com/banzai/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1839&mode=&order=0&thold=0

First thing's first: I don't really care what MTV does, and frankly, I think it's a good thing that our fandom's made it big enough to be featured on network television. However, MTV's obviously picking a fight with us when they start turning our beloved Narutards into normal people! I mean, without them, how ever will we feel superior have as much fun in conventions?

So what better way than to tinker with their new contest? (LINK to their contest: http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/01/06/who-is-the-greatest-badass-of-all-time-mtv-news-search-begins/It's like pranking your sibling who just 1-uped you. We've got to get an Anime movie character out there, but in order to skew the charts, we've also got to realize that we need to vote for the same character in order to get him in the charts.

Thus, I elect that we vote for Kamina as the Greatest Badass that's ever hit the screens from the Gurren Lagann Crimson Edition movie. If you're don't want to vote for Kamina, there are of course other recommended choices such as D from Vampire Hunter D or Spike from Cowboy Bebop: The Movie.

Why these three and not other anime movies?

Unfortunately, since our numbers are so small, we won't stand a chance in winning unless we focus our votes to make them count. That means picking a few characters and running with them.

Basically, it's just a way for the community to have a bit of fun. You don't even have to hate MTV to do this; I'm doing it just because I wanna see Kamina get into the top 10. What else can you do besides casting in your ballet? If you work for other hobby sites, try rehashing the news there. Tell your other closet Otaku friends! Remember: the contest ends Feburary 6th!

Just think: What would Kamina do?
