A pineapple bun is a kind of sweet pastry popular in Hong Kong, Macau, some other areas in southern China, and in Chinese communities in North America. They can also be found in bakeries in Taiwan. It is known in Cantonese as bo lo baau, in which "bo lo" means "pineapple", and "baau" refers to a kind of bun-like item in Chinese cuisine. It is commonly found in Chinese bakeries, and is mentioned quite frequently on TV, radio and films in Hong Kong.

So basically, it's this sweet bread that has a really sweet topping. It's really easy - ish to make too. I can't really give you the recipe...since the one I have is all in Chinese and I really don't want to translate it all, but I'm pretty sure you can find it from the internet. The 'pineapple' topping is made when an extremely oily and flaky-ish crust is placed on top of the dough and cooked. As the bread expands, the topping will crack into that crust which gives it its name. I personally prefer the Sogo Bakery Pineapple Bun over my mom's because the Sogo one is more tender and soft and the crust doesn't flake off, while my mom's does. (Love you mommy. *puppy eyes*) But it's super unhealthy and bad for you...especially when you're like some people and put slabs of butter in it.


And just because it's called 'Pineapple Bun' doesn't mean that it actually contains pineapple.
