Save your file as a GIF, or PNG, without the background, or avatar base behind it. The easiest way, would be to start your design, on a transparent layer.

Most of the programs that I've used, have a checkerboard pattern, so you can tell if it's transparent.

Hope this helped. =P

If you don't have a program that does alpha channel support, you can get "The Gimp" for free (legally). http://www.gimp.org/downloads Sometimes the windows installer version is a build or two behind the source code, but the difference is rarely noticed. If you are making items, I would save the avatar base, open it and immediately save it as an XCF file (much like Photoshop's PSD files) as the name of your item. Create a new layer and begin drawing your item on that layer. When you are ready to upload, save your XCF, "turn off" the layer with the avatar and save as PNG. If for whatever reason you prefer GIF (smaller file) after turning off the avatar layer, on the Layers menu Merge Visible Layers, then on the Image menu set mode to Indexed color then Save As Gif. In both cases be careful not to save over your XCF file. Using more than one drawing layer will allow you to produce some effects, but you'll need to play around and get a "feel" for it. Keep in mind that the items have a "stack order" just like the layers, except you cannot choose the order, one of the threads explains the order so find it and keep in mind when designing your item. Good Luck
