I know there a number of "Japanese versions are better than the English dubs" threads. Here's a different take on it: IMHO, a REAL ANIME FAN is one who watches both versions (but not for every show). I have seen lots of subbed and lots of dubbed shows. I like crappy dubs-4Kids even-and subbed shows. This is my question: For fans out there, what show would you consider the Japanese version to be "crappy"? Only one I can think is Ghost stories and ones like Kenshin or DBZ or other shows you know a women does the lead male character because the lead male has a girly voice. Just as there are bad dubs out there, there are a Japanese dubs that are bad but this isn't as often. I won't deny a lot of the DVDs anime dubs I've seen with the subs are close to the original. I also admit I like watching anime that the dubs are considered second to the Japanese.

I don't think most Japanese VA can act "cocky." I mean "cocky" as in showing confident in what you do. Because quite honestly almost any form of cockiness is looked down upon in today's Japanese society, due to the fact the Japanese people tend to label social confident as Imperialism and/or elitism, a national shame that got Japan as a nation started the Pacific War, and subsequently lose it.

If it's on tv I'll watch it, but I'm not paying for a 35 year old woman trying to talk in a squeeky voice to sound like a 18 year old girl.

Japanese voice dubs are just far more professional and their actors are good and normally the right age for the voice. I never ask my friends to watch english dubbed anime, because it makes my hobby look a lot more retarded than it is, just due to some 35 year old woman, voicing a 12 year old going "BIG BRRRRRROOOOOOOTHHHEEEEEEEER."

I came up 2 new ones: I prefer Steve Blum's Orachimaru to Kujira's and Josh Phillips doing the dub voice of Jan Valentine in Hellsing.

As oppose to Dragon Ball's Son Goku's original VA, Masako Nozawa; a Japanese woman in her 50s trying to sound manly for the anime equivalent of Superman.

Since you mentioned Hellsing, you can't go without mentioning the English VA for Father Alexander Anderson.

And I just can't get enough of Steve Blum, from his Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop, Kazuma in S-CRY-ed, Mugen in Samurai Champloo, Roger Smith in The Big O, he's the voice of cockiness. Hell, he even made Leeron Ritona in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann sounded cocky and fabulously gay!

it's when the voice acting does not fit the character/face...

ie.. Kenshin, Lavi from D Gray Man and etc.. imo

however.. it hardly happens.... 99%.. the voice acting is great!!!

-simple, this so called "dub anime" is quite annoying, there is a major lack of passion of foreign voice actors in acting.

-comparing foreign dubbing to the original is almost hysterical *strongly pointing at english naruto's voice actor*
