Japanese voice dubs are just far more professional and their actors are good and normally the right age for the voice. I never ask my friends to watch english dubbed anime, because it makes my hobby look a lot more retarded than it is, just due to some 35 year old woman, voicing a 12 year old going "BIG BRRRRRROOOOOOOTHHHEEEEEEEER."

As oppose to Dragon Ball's Son Goku's original VA, Masako Nozawa; a Japanese woman in her 50s trying to sound manly for the anime equivalent of Superman.

Thank you! This made my morning it's so true. Not that I dislike her voice but it makes the point great,

I was aware of that, they don't exactly represent all anime though. :P

Do u think any of the english voice actors are EVER younger than 25? I don't

Like when Full Metal Alchemist got a 12 year old boy to voice AL instead of a woman who turns 30 this year (Rie Kugimiya). Yes folks, most of your squeeky voiced Japanese women are just as old as their English counterparts, or older.

I know there a number of "Japanese versions are better than the English dubs" threads. Here's a different take on it: IMHO, a REAL ANIME FAN is one who watches both versions (but not for every show). I have seen lots of subbed and lots of dubbed shows. I like crappy dubs-4Kids even-and subbed shows. This is my question: For fans out there, what show would you consider the Japanese version to be "crappy"? Only one I can think is Ghost stories and ones like Kenshin or DBZ or other shows you know a women does the lead male character because the lead male has a girly voice. Just as there are bad dubs out there, there are a Japanese dubs that are bad but this isn't as often. I won't deny a lot of the DVDs anime dubs I've seen with the subs are close to the original. I also admit I like watching anime that the dubs are considered second to the Japanese.

By REAL ANIME FAN you mean the fat otaku who is married to his pillow wife?

I wouldn't say anywhere near most.
Naming 2/3 or even 10 doesn't really count as a majority :P

Besides, it's equally about the pitch, sound and word/vocab that gets lost in translation.

IT depends...
on the anime..
there is some anime
which is good in original voices but fail in dubbing..
theres is also anime which is better to be watched in original dub w/ english or other language..
well me?
i love watching japanese dub w/ english sub..
for me thats best..
and you should consider the language..
why?
try to watch ANIMES W/ FILIPINO DUB..
ITS FUCKING TRASH!!!!

I think it's a mistake to place a value judgement in the thesis of the original post if you expect to get fair and intelligent responses.

Also terms like 'trash, crappy, stinks' should be used with caution if want to engage in dialogue.

I can say, I don't like anime Blah and not offend anyone's sensibilities. I'm saying what I like not telling someones else that they like trash.

That said. It mostly depends on what I watch first. whatever voices get 'set' in my mind as the voices of the characters are what I consider to be the proper voices.

If I watch a dub first I find the original voices too high pitched; distracting.

it's when the voice acting does not fit the character/face...

ie.. Kenshin, Lavi from D Gray Man and etc.. imo

however.. it hardly happens.... 99%.. the voice acting is great!!!

that cause normally Kenshin isn't serious at all but when he fighting, the voice suite him......

Yes, they really are. I have a few hundred cast interviews on DVDs. The majority of the established voice actresses in Japan are probably 27-45. Of course there are a lot of younger ones doing bit parts and minor character but the majority of recurring voices are done by experienced veterans.

Japanese tonal inflections are very different from English. I find a lot of the time when people think an English dub somehow sounds 'wrong' they misunderstand the Japanese dialog. In the Japanese language a lot more is implied and left unstated, tonal inflection is more important and many non-Japanese don't understand that. Sometimes subtitles just can't convey this as italics only go so far. There are trade-offs and no 'perfect' translation solution.

Inuyashas jap voice annoys the hell out of me but his dubbed english voice doesnt

Fullmetal alchemist, Bleach, Naurto, Jigoku shougo.. are the only anime ive seen that have equal talent when it comes to voice acting .

Anything by funamation dubbed is pretty bad
