If it's on tv I'll watch it, but I'm not paying for a 35 year old woman trying to talk in a squeeky voice to sound like a 18 year old girl.

Japanese voice dubs are just far more professional and their actors are good and normally the right age for the voice. I never ask my friends to watch english dubbed anime, because it makes my hobby look a lot more retarded than it is, just due to some 35 year old woman, voicing a 12 year old going "BIG BRRRRRROOOOOOOTHHHEEEEEEEER."

As oppose to Dragon Ball's Son Goku's original VA, Masako Nozawa; a Japanese woman in her 50s trying to sound manly for the anime equivalent of Superman.

Thank you! This made my morning it's so true. Not that I dislike her voice but it makes the point great,

I was aware of that, they don't exactly represent all anime though. :P

Do u think any of the english voice actors are EVER younger than 25? I don't

Like when Full Metal Alchemist got a 12 year old boy to voice AL instead of a woman who turns 30 this year (Rie Kugimiya). Yes folks, most of your squeeky voiced Japanese women are just as old as their English counterparts, or older.

When her voice fits the role, I've got no problem, And quite frankly, you need someone like Masako Nozawa, who can sound naive for Goku's voice for the Japanese audiences. And it just so happens that the Japanese culture has a different standard than the North American culture regarding being naive.

And with age comes with experience, which is a pity that Osamu Ichikawa, the VA for Norris Packard in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, passed away earlier this year due to heart failure. He was 72.

He was also the voice of Boddole Zer in Macross, the Zentradi supreme commander who ordered the annihilation of Earth.

Hell, even the casts of Doraemon and Sazae-san have had to be changed because many of the actors were just too old to be in their roles anymore. Kikoku Inoue (Aina from 08th MS Team ) has a running joke about being 17 years old (she's 44) because she's so frequently cast as a teenager. She's been playing Belldandy for 15 years!

Oh yeah, the Inoue Kikoku, 17 years old(井上喜久子17歳です) gag! Now that's a good one!

She always calls herself "17 years old" (井上喜久子17歳です). Fans would refute her jokingly with "Oi! Oi!" (roughly equivalent to "yeah right"). To further promote her ideal, she founded a "cult" of "17-year-olds" (Juu-nana-sai Kyou, 17歳教). Current cult members include Yukari Tamura, Sakura Nogawa, Rina Satou, and Yui Horie.

I usually watch an anime in Japanese first then if I buy the dvd I'll watch it dubbed. There are quite alot of good dubs out there e.g. Cowboy Bebop, Gundams (except Seed/Seed Destiny), FMA, DBZ, Trigun and Love Hina and I even like Yu-Gi-Oh dubbed lol...obviously there are some really bad dubs like One Piece and Naruto but I don't have a problem with dubs at all if they're good. Some of the english voice actors really bring some characters to life e.g. Johnny Yong Bosch with Vash the Stempede and Crispin Freeman with Alucard Oh and I absolutely hate Goku's Japanese voice...it's so very very bad why the hell didn't they change it after he turns 18 near the end of Dragonball? Probably the only reason I won't watch DB subbed because I think Vegeta's jap voice is very good; it's more cold and menacing than the angry, shouting one that Chris Sabat gives him...although that's awesome too XD

I came up 2 new ones: I prefer Steve Blum's Orachimaru to Kujira's and Josh Phillips doing the dub voice of Jan Valentine in Hellsing.

The only people who say Hellsing is better dubbed are non-english...there's more than just cockney's, posh people and northerners in england dammit! Also, Jan is done by the guy who does Zoro from One Piece how can the english dub be better?

Crappy dubs happen to good and bad (or not as good) anime alike. It takes a voice that does not fit the character. I don't know how they choose the voice actors for dubbing in English, etc. but I think in Japan they try to fit the voice with not only the character (age, gender) but also his personality and mannerisms. That's why it is 90% better in Japanese than in other languages.

For example, in Japanese,Naruto's voice actress is amazing (and much less annoying than in the English dub) and in D. Gray-man, Allen Walker's voice actress is absolutely incredible (when Allen screams from pain or whatever, I get chills doing my spine). Also, in Bleach, Ichigo's voice actor gives this rough edge and toughness to his speech that is lost in English dub.

Naruto's dubbing isn't THAT horrible, it's mostly the pronounciations of the Japanese words that are strange (i.e. Nawroutoe, Sawkra, Sawske and who can forget Kakawshi). I personnally love Inuyasha's voice actor in English, 'cause he sounds rough and animal-like and he even growls (^.^) whereas in Japanese they gave him a young voice, and I hate how yells "Kagome" so high-pitched. You know, in English, he sounded like a man, but in Japanese, he sounds like a boy. I don't know, I prefer the man not the boy (if you know what I mean).

I'm going to have to agree that DBZ in Japanese is really, really awkward to watch and listen too. And the episodes of FMA I watched in Japanese were kind of irritating. Those are two situations I would much rather an English dub.

The thing is, everything comes down to taste... For example

Anime's I love watching in native language w/Eng subs: Naruto, Bleach, Evangelion, Hellsing, Akira, FMA, Trigun, Cowboy Beebop, Neo Angelica, oh god... too many to list.

Anime's I will never listen to in Eng dub: Naruto, Evangelion, (Hell, pretty much anything that has the English voice actor for Shinji in Eva)

Also, one thing that really irks me in English Dubs... When they do like... a Special Attack or Ninja Technique they say the english translated name for it... There's nothing more annoying than watching the English Version of Naruto and listening to him scream out "Mass Shadow Clone Technique!!!" Yeah, uhm... That just doesn't work...

So, what would be my definition of a bad dub... When you watch it and the show becomes cringe worthy because of what you're hearing... The same goes for native languages w/Eng subs (So basically, it all comes down to taste).

Inuyashas jap voice annoys the hell out of me but his dubbed english voice doesnt

Fullmetal alchemist, Bleach, Naurto, Jigoku shougo.. are the only anime ive seen that have equal talent when it comes to voice acting .

Anything by funamation dubbed is pretty bad

Bold added to quote for emphasis

Apparently not, since the english dub of FMA comes from Funimation.
