Here are examples of what KB is talking about from my own life.

My highschool buddy, a full blood Filipino, was named "Darren Roberts" by his parents. He absolutely hated it so he asked his friends to give him a Filipino name. As a joke they decided to call him "Philbert" and it was so funny it stuck; anything was better than what he was given in his eyes.

My other high school buddy was full blood Mexican and his parents named him "Daniel Wallace". All his life he has felt ethnically castrated and never ethnically identified himself, regardless of how others identified him.

I know I'm being a total nerd here, but if you have to pick one dominant outside influence it'd have to be Spanish.

Con: Betraying your culture.
Con: Seem like you want to be another culture.

Pro: good for trade and no embrassing/annoying mispronounciations and always being asked "How do you spell that?"

I don't think it's a betrayal of one's culture at all. My chinese friends have chinese names and english names. If they are in China, they are called by their chinese name.

And if your friends only have an English name and no Chinese, what do you think of that?
