Cease Fire?

Three long weeks of horrible warfare have finally come to an end. Over 1,200 Palestinians were killed in the conflict. Half of these were civilians, a third women and children. Thirteen Israelis were also killed and many more were injured on both sides.

Although Israel has left Hamas’ smuggling tunnels in tact, rocket fire into Israel has not stopped. Five missiles were sent into southern Israeli cities, but there were no fatalities. In another instant Hamas militants opened fire on Israeli patrollers. Israel retaliated with heavy artillery fire.

Israeli spokesman Mark Regev has said, “Israel will only act in response to attacks by Hamas, either rockets into Israel or firing upon our forces…Hamas does deliberately torpedo this cease-fire, they are exposing themselves before the entire international community as a group of cynical extremists that have absolutely no interest in the well-being of the people of Gaza”

Prime Minister Ehud Olmer has said that Israel will only consider withdrawing its troops if Hamas ceases fire.

Hamas says that this is unacceptable and that they will not acknowledge the cease fire unless Israel withdraws all of its troops, opens all borders, and stops retaliatory fire into Gaza.

What are your thoughts? Personally I think that Israel is just trying to show the world that they’re not the aggressors. I don’t think they suspect Hamas to cease its attacks, and I do not believe that Hamas will. I think Israel wants to remind the world that Hamas is the aggressor and that this nominal ‘unilateral cease fire’ is a political stunt.

However, rather or not this is true I think that Hamas is demonstrating how radical it really is. Israel has compromised on her demands but Hamas refuses to do the same. So, right now I’m not exactly illusioned by either side. Hamas remains the same radical terrorist organization it always was and Israel is just trying to gain international support.

Its a little too early too be judgmental on Israel or Hamas. Its wiser to keep judgement and see out how the cease fire talks will pan out. As of now, there are negotiations and talks to Hamas through Egypt.

I completly agree with that point. I think it may just be another publicity stunt to show who the bad guys are. It's either that or they realized that their attacks are only gaining them more enemies than supporters and it's not helping, the only country that is supporting it at this point is mostly the U.S.A.

Also don't forget that there's a lot of political events happening in both Israel and U.S.A, more fighting at such a time will only make things a lot more harder, especially with a new president stepping in on the 20th in the U.S.A.

yes, that's true. israieli forces might stop their attacks but the siege around Gaza didnt stop
if the israeli are too kind and they want to cease fire, then why not GO OUT of gaza and open the borders to show their GOOD AND PEACEFUL SIDE???????

I dont trust media coverage any more. None of the news outlets mention anything about Israel's illegal 18 month blockade of Gaza in an attempt to provoke Hamas, and then the 'pre-emptive airstrikes' launched as a last resort on November 4 to finally get them to start firing those Qassam rockets for long enough, so that they can counteract a month ahead of elections. It's fuckin' simple if you look at it and the Hamas leadership are paying the price for being thoroughly suckered by Israel.

That’s kind of funny, we’re trapped in a circular debate. Israel wont consider pulling its troops out until missile fire stops. Hamas wont stop firing missiles until Israeli troops pull out. The 'cease fire,' is a publicity stunt. That's what I think.

Most people wouldn’t know this because nobody follows German politics, but I’m German so I took an interest. The German president has actually voiced his support of Israel, even after visiting Gaza. He said that he was shocked by the carnage he saw there but that the German people support Israel’s right to defend itself. Like America Germany is supporting Israel but encouraging a cease fire.

Also, they announced on the news today that Obama will be taking his Presidential oath from within the protection of a bullet proof cage….which is hilarious.

But, Northboundsnow has a point. We're both just speculating. Maybe this is legit and Israel is sick of the fight? There were some video journals of soldiers released, and many of the Israeli soldiers really are freaked out by the battle. They talked about how terrible it was and how disturbed they were by the casualties. Israel really loves it soldiers. Let's pray this if for real, shall we?

Hmm... I find it interesting that Germany and the US are among the only countries who support Israel.

Well, really they’re not. A lot of nations are supporting Israel, but mostly it’s just torn. Take the UK, for example. One United Kingdom official condemns Israel and in the next moment another buttresses it. But, I do think that western nations are proving themselves hypocritical.

I mean it’s okay for the UK to slaughter people in Iraq as a movement of support for America’s “War on Terror,” but Israel’s war on terror is completely unacceptable. Yeah, there were a considerable measure more casualties in our war than this one.
