I was messing around online and stumbled upon [urlhttp://www.spinner.com/category/the-hit-list/. As far as sad songs go the list is pretty good, but I'm sure there are some large omissions.

What are some of the other sad songs missing and what are your stories behind them if any?

I'm very surprised they left out "I'm so lonely I could cry" Hank Williams and "Yesterday" by the Beatles

Gary Jules' cover of Tears for Fears' Mad World.

Evidently it's from the Donnie Darko soundtrack, though I haven't seen that movie (I'll get around to it sometime). How could they miss a song with the lyrics "the dreams in which I'm dying / are the best I've ever had"? I love this song.

I feel sorry for this thread since it's been here since a while ago and no one has replied.

For me, it's more of a personal opinion after reflecting on the song, but "Girl from Ipanema" - there were many versions, so I'm not so sure who made the original. Maybe someone can help me out on this one. :P

EDIT to above: Haha... looks like I spoke too soon.

^ From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_from_Ipanema

It was written in 1962, with music by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes with English lyrics written later by Norman Gimbel.

[ . . . ]

The first commercial recording was in 1962, by Pery Ribeiro. The version performed by Astrud Gilberto, along with João Gilberto and Stan Getz, from the 1963 album Getz/Gilberto, became an international hit.

Which version have you heard?

^ oh yeah, astrud gilberto. Thanks, I was raking my brain trying to remember him. I've heard Astrud's version, a version with Nora Jones in it, a local (Filipino) version (but it was bad... didn't like it) and an instrumental version featuring Juan Carlos Jobim (is that the right spelling? )

errrh... i hate to confess this... im more of an alternative rock person... but...
a song that really makes me tend to cry is...

"Somewhere Down The Road"
just the beginning of the song is so darn heavy for me to handle
"...we had the right love at the wrong time..."

another is:
What Matters Most
"it's not how long we held each other's hand"

OMG am i musshy and cheezy ^^

T_T i knew people wud react to me like this

im ashamed of myself

i really can't be so sad with some alternative songs, but now i remember one song:

Photograph by Nickelback

but i won't take it back, the first two songs are one of the saddest for me. real real sad.

I'm surprised there's nothing by Morrissey and/or The Smiths up there... seeing as they write some pretty depressing lyrics.
Also a song called "Alicia Lies" though I can't remeber the artist.

Hmm... I just watched Sekai no chuushin de ai wo sakebu yesterday a sad Japanese movie and the movie them song was Hitomi wo Tojite by Hirai Ken. Whenever I listen to that song you can practically hear the sadness. I avoid it when I'm in a good mood

Also.... that Des'ree song 'Kissing you" (love theme from Romeo & Juliet) like whoa... it gives you the shivers.
AND not sadness as such more like melancholy, Bright Eyes' Lua.
