I found the referenced article lacking in some categories so I'll add some of my own. Also, since this thread asks about both geeks AND nerds, I'll tentatively define those terms as follows:
Geek == fan bordering on obsessive. (does not imply expertise)
Nerd == expert to a depth few understand. (does not imply obsession)
Using those definitions I fall into these categories:
Anime/SciFi/Fantasy/D&D Geek and Computer Nerd.

I'm a pretty geeky MMORPG player, I also play console games.
Anime/manga should be obvious since I'm on Crunchyroll.
I'm a nerd when it comes to literature and grammar.

Interesting that this thing's been running for over three and a half years now...
I'm more like a dabbler of geekdom, but identify most with anime and computer geekdom.
Admittedly, I'm surprised the article left out computer geeks/"hackers", as they are a typically large contingent of those considered "geeks," and usually their interests extend into the other realms.
As my buddy's girlfriend said, the subcultures intermingle, so once you enter one, it is much easier to go over to others. Perhaps geekdom could be considered a gateway drug?
On another note, I tried playing some D&D with friends when I was stationed in Germany; it was my first time. Later, my friend described me as the only person he knew to have "failed at playing D&D." I still don't know if that is something to be proud of or not.
And while I'm giving anecdotes, while in Kuwait, having a conversation with some friends, I passed a girl who could fit the old stereotype for "geek girl", i.e. stumpy with glasses, and she caught me saying some word not typically used in conversation.
"Excuse me, do you play D&D?"
"No, actually, I don't."
I guess even our speech patterns can give us away, regardless of what we look like. Then again, I was wearing the same uniform as everyone else with a rifle across my back, so speech was a good way of picking people out from the crowd...
