I PERSONALLY TINK IT IS A CHOICE BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE CHOOSE TO BE FAT AND ITS SAD WHEN THE PERSON CANT HELP IT CAUSE ITS IN THERE GENES!!! MY OPINION... WHAT DO YOU THINK!!!

A few things create such results, fast food culture, less physical activity, and of course genetics. I do not think people choose to be fat but rather have no motivation to actually add exercise to their lives they just lose themselves watching t.v. or try to shed the pounds taking in the false promises made by fad diets.

Well, Its many of those things but there is something called a compulsive overeater which is an eating disorder like bulimia or anorexia. It is considered a disease like those and like alcoholism.

I don't really believe that people actually CHOOSE to be overweight.
No one wakes up one morning and decides this..
Of course it's a disorder.. Most may not even realize it.
With all this fast food everywhere I don't blame them for gaining the weight.
There's a McDonalds on like every street. It's fast and convenient, that's why we eat it.
I also think it is genetic, no matter what you may always be big-boned if it
would run in the family. But then again, I eat like a pig and I'm at a
pathetic 103 lbs.. So maybe it depends on your metabolism too..
Meh, I ramble on too much <.<

There is an obesity that is a disorder and there is one by choice.
The disorder is from health problems such as thyroid defects.
The choice one is the "big-boned" guy in your neighborhood.

It can also be genetics, animals are meant to store fats. But humans have plenty of sources so their genes are against the world.

i think-obesity is not a disease itself-it's just a sign that you have more serious health problem....

no, people do not choose to be fat. its their metabolism thats to blame, not them as persons.
nobody just says "hey, i wanna be obese!"
i think its psychological on their part, thinking that they're still hungry even when they're full..
the body has its food limit but the brain keeps pressing on that it needs more food and thats why obese people eat more more more.

Depends.
If you became obese because of the medicine you use, it's not a disorder (you don't have really much of a choice).
Sometimes you're eating food because it's an addiction.
Sometimes it's because of depression (eating your sorrows away).
And sometime your mind keeps telling you're not full and have to eat more.
I do think that in most cases it's an disorder.

I am not arguing with you, just want to clear something up.
Over-eating is the opposite of bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. The first one is just what it says; someone who eats too much. The second one is induced puking to become skinny. Third one is not eating at all to become skinny. And they are considered psychological disorders.

Moving on to the topic, well... being fat has a lot of factors involved in it: aging, metabolism, choices, food choices, diseases, disorders, social influences, stupidity, diet pills, liposuction, genes, boredom, modified parts of the brain( not sure if it has been done on humans, most likely not, but lab rats proved it), parents, food source, money, desire for bigger breasts, desire for bigger buttocks, etc.
But one thing is for sure, fat people are fat.

Genes CAN play a role in obesity.
some people just have that factor in their bloodline.
but u can also work off that weight.

you can also be obese due to stress. Stress alters hormone balance and can cause side effects such as excessive eating. just like stress, depression can lead to obesity.

Most obese poeple would say that their metabolism is slow that even if they eat less they gain weight, and that the skinny ones have fast metabolism thats why theyre so thin. But actually its the other way around. Ive read an article in medical magazine that states that metabolism of an obese man is actually faster than that of a thin or average person. Why is that? Think about it, a large person needs lots amount of energy just so he could walk, run, wash the dishes, do the laundry because of his/her larger body frame. In contrast to that a thin person has a slow metabolism because he needs less energy to work because of a smaller body frame.

Being obese may or may not be an eating disorder IMO. Example: Person 1 and 2 eat the same amount of large meals each day, lets say 3500 calories a day (the average recommeded for an adult is 1500-2500 cal). Person 1 is obese because he has a sedentary lifestlye, after he eats all he does it sleep and watch tv. Person 2 is not obese since he exercises 30 min to 1 hour a day containing aerobic, stretching and flexibility and resistence exercises, so it works for him you couldnt call that a disorder since he is healthy right?

Obesity a choice? definitely. But a small percentage of obesity is actually a result of a f^cked up genetic makeup. I cant really remember what happens to a person whit this disorder, its something to do with lacking some enzymes for digestion of fat..not really sure.

and be teased and discriminated?
