It sucks, because you never know who you are talking to. I automatically threat an other player different, if the character is female, so it sucks when there is a guy playing. And asking causes awkward situations.

The only reason I could see people complaining about this are those who are:

1) Trying to hook up with a person in RL while online

2) Can't stand the thought of role play or people playing someone they're not.

If you can't handle such things then you shouldn't be playing games online at all. Find another hobby or enjoyment.

In this case most WoW players are annoying because they're playing someone they're not. After all, Ogres and Trolls and Elves, do not exist in RL.

My character is a female on WoW never hid the fact I'm male IRL. I see no issue.

MMORPG = Many Men Online Role-Playing Girls...

However, in all seriousness. I personally play as girls (being a guy) because I like how they look and I identify with the character better. One of the funniest things of course is when other players (predominantly male) actually think I am female. Even if I state otherwise. So after much badgering it became a long running joke. I finally tried to convince them by talking to them on voice chat (ventrillo). However, since I don't have a particularly deep voice, They still thought I might be a girl. >_<

So while I play as a female for different reasons, sometimes we can't avoid getting the latter stigma even though we try to avoid it.

I always play a female character in mmos. Why? If i'm going to be staring at the rear end of a character for several hours at a time i'd much rather it be a nice tight female rump than some dude.

The problem is, i tend to act eh, feminine / flirty in online games. The sad thing is, thats actually my personality, i don't intend to be but i'm apparently very flirty. More than once this had resulted in idiots giving me free stuff :P

I never claim to be a woman, but I never deny it either. More free stuff that way >.>

It's usually 50/50, it all depends on how cool the male characters look. I prefer to be a male character if the weapons are huge and the armor is bulky then I'll be a male. If the males look like girls or if they're half naked then I'll play a female character. So if I do play a female character, I usually give myself a name that shows that I'm actually a dude behind the keyboard.

Some girls play as male characters too, I've met a few like that in my days of playing WoW.

I'm a girl & play girl chars in mmo's i never get free stuff wtf! On the sexbox 360 I have had to change my gamertag three times because they were to girly and I kept getting harassed So now I pretend to be a guy with a really w/e gamertag... unless I talk, people will more than likely think I'm a guy too. Like the other day I was playing reach in rumble pit and I was winning by a lot and some guy kept calling me a f4g haha it upset me tho and so i told him to stfu and gtfo if he sucked and he was like OMG your a girl how the hell can you be good blah blah typical crap that gets thrown at female gamers [that are good at games ^^]

Personally I have one char on WoW that I roleplay as a female (like really into character) the only people there that know my real identity are my guild mates and the people on my friendslist... it is strange that I haven't been asked my real gender yet... Am I good at getting into the role or is it just too obvius? XD

Personally I have no problem about the "online oposite gender syndrome" (OOGS), as long they do not abuse it.

Yeah, all my characters in any game have been female. Well given the chance.
If i am going to stare at a character for long periods of time it mine as well be a girl.
I have never hidden the fact that i am a guy, nor have i ever acted like a girl.

I was the same way, bigger the armor the better.
Then i made the switch on a faction transfer.
Seeing this tiny, thin character put out so much hurt is oddly entertaining.
