Guys pretending to be girls..
Come on guys, be yourself. We tend to think you're a noob if you pretend to be a girl..

MMORPG=Many men online role playing girls.
80% of the female characters in games are actually guys. Just saying.

It's only annoying when you hit on one of them and they take you on a ride later to find out they were a guy, that happened to me awhile ago

I see nothing wrong with males playing female characters, or vice versa.

Males pretending to be real life females, and vice versa are very annoying, and more than a little creepy.

This.

While I understand the online community is filled with lots of different individuals, and if some people want to play a female model, that's fair enough. I do draw the line when they use the game in order to actually "pretend" to be female.

I don't care personally, if they like it good. I don't flirt in game, I have very close online friends and I don't even know their name.

It really is. You are your sex. Unless you have a desire to be something else, it just doesn't make sense. The same goes for girls that try to pretend being guys in my personal opinion. It all just feels manipulative and puts in an unnecessary factor when establishing bonds with people. Its one of the reasons I don't really do online games anymore. I just can't trust who I am talking to really.

It's just a difference of viewpoint. The males playing female characters are 99% of the time doing that because they make a clear distinguishing line between the avatar representing the player in the world, and the player themselves.

Unless they're roleplaying, they likely consider communication to be with the completely unidentified person behind the character, rather than communicating with the avatar itself, as the player's stand-in. About the only thing they may get that may identify the player behind the avatar is that the avatar gives you a sense of what kind of style, or character that person likes.

It's not manipulative at all, and even if they are the same sex as their avatar, you can't trust who you are talking to any more than otherwise regardless. It makes no practical difference in how much you really know about the other person.

As for girls pretending to be guys, it's been mentioned before, but part of the reason why is so they don't have to deal with the sexual harassment of the idiotic kids (physically or otherwise) populating online games. The other part are probably just like the guys playing female characters I mentioned in my first paragraph.

I suppose you have some points with avatar choices in principle...

But your description at least solidifies my dislike of online games. Besides the fact that I find the gameplay boring, the people act like others online. They hide more about themselves than they would if you just came across them in the streets. Often they are ruder. You I feel like your girl comment is a testament of it since a girl can't just enjoy being a girl avatar online because of losers who feel the need to harass them. Its all a system I can't ever find myself endorsing

Unless you're looking for an internet girlfriend, not really.
