irrationality is only more proof of superiority to other animals. instead of instinct, we actually think, no matter how irrational, how emotional, how stupid that thought maybe, we still think. i want to see a lion defend himself in a court to justify killing the antler.

i think thatd make a great show. kind of like ally mcbeal or boston public, only with animals.

Why does complex thought matter? It doesn't, it only matters for humans. We're talking about whether humans are superior over other animals or not, and all things can only be compared to each other depending on what they have in common, what gives meaning to their existence. And overall the main goal of all animals is to live prosperly and reproduce. In that sense humans aren't any better than all the other animals on the planet.

complex thought matter is what seperates us from animals. otherwise, based on instinct, yea we suck.

we're all kingdom animalia anyway. but that wouldnt exist if our thought patterns never evolved. the internet wouldnt..and i wouldnt be typing right. quite possibly hunting..or being hunted.

Right, I agree, but I don't see how complex though makes us any better than other animals.

I think the whole arguement hinges upon definitions;

What is an animal, if you say all non human animalia then maybe humans are, but then again, as previously stated, humans are animals.

What makes something superior;
Intellect?
Evolutionary Sucess?
Level of Social Interaction?
Survival Rates?
Appreciation of Art?
Language?
Ability to move outside its environmental niche?
Ability to kill one another?

By some standards cockroaches are doing pretty well...
And one population of Chimps may have more genetic diversity than the whole human race, so they're doing quite well evolutionarily.
And bacteria are the ultimate survivors and communicators, they can exchange genetic material!
(though humans win on the killing bit... >_<)

The ideas of irrationality... compared to cats, humans are irrational, this is because cat behaviour is quite easy to explain, and human behaviour is reliatively more difficult. However I would claim that humans are just like cats, we evolved from the same roots, and we have the same form of CNS (central nervous system).
In this "mind" of ours it is claimed that we hold the free-will which causes us to be irrational, I claim not, where can it have come from, as we learn more about ourselves we will eradicate the idea of free-will.
Therefore the difference is physical, just the same way as a cheetah is faster than a human, or an eagle can see better.

I wouldn't claim that humans are superior, we are just different.

^^ no it's not, it's BS... the more complex the words the more likely people are to agree, esspecially when your conclusion is so mundane and obvious as that one...

oops. I think I just murdered a thread, quick someone disagree with me...

Well of course... well the animals of today at least. Some animals may be stronger but humans are smarter and that counts for a lot

^ "Agree or Disagree?"

^ A: Disagree

This thread fails cause it lacks definition. Just asking "are humans superior to animals?" is too vague, there are many ways to discuss it, and doesnt mean everyone's following your thoughts. Maybe the thread maker would like to add a few more phrases, 'just for the sake of discussion'?
