God it really depends on your taste. If you like either of the genres go torrent some yaoi/yuri to watch by your lonesome and never let anyone know lol. But seriously. I'm a huge fan of yaoi. Hardcore, manxman angsty stuff. I am not so into bubblegum, fluffy productions like JJR and the like.

Looking at the initial crux of the thread, I'll address all the issues. First, which is better. This is obviously opinional, and covered in countless other threads. (Though in fairness, this thread does date back almost 5 years now.) I personally am rather firmly entrenched on the yaoi side.

Next, acceptabilities. This is a weird one. In regards to anime and manga, yaoi is by far the more recognized one. It's gotten more terms to refer to it and its fans, a Japanese bookstore may have its own BL section (including ones like Book-Off in NYC), it has a better reputation of not just being gratuitous porn (though I do know both exist on both sides), and certain areas even cater specifically to fans of BL. (Otome Road, anyone? How about Pop Japan's yaoi tour?) So among the community, there's a lot more support for yaoi.

But what about society as a whole? Well, in Japan, nobody cares what you're doing behind closed doors. Your sexual life is kept to yourself, regardless of orientation. Outside... things are regretfully dominated by the straight male. Quite a few guys think that yuri is okay, but not yaoi, because it caters to what they want to see. Lesbian sex is a much more common theme seen in "straight" porn; two men going at it is almost always relegated to gay porn. (Of which, you can also find lesbian porn in its own section.) Furthermore, women are in general, more open to the existance of both yaoi and yuri, so the opposition spoken out by the straight guys is not really seen going the other way. Thus, yuri is seen as more accepted on that aspect.

I like both yaoi and yuri equally but I'm very and I mean VERY picky with it...

I don't ship everyone into a yaoi/yuri couple

I prefer Yuri. If there was a blank canvas and either of these was the paint it'd turn out like this:

Yaoi would be bland as practically all of them have the same type of characters. Having a 'cute' guy and chibi stuff doesn't really work.

Yuri would be colorful and flowery, there's always a mix of masculine and feminine female leads but their unpredictable nature steals the show. Not to mention they look cool in any context.

This is also just my opinion. Try not to bust a blood vessel.

I only read or watch Yuri. No Yaoi

I watch both Yaoi and Yuri.

To me, I pick the ones I watch based on the storyline and how funny it is.

Good story + Comedy = Me watching it
