Which do you believe is better, movies or anime? Movies, as in, any feature length film from any country, Disney, Star Wars, whatever. Which is better in any way, quality-wise, impact, etc. I've heard this discussion before, but in my opinion, movies are better. It's not like I dislike anime or anything, but I simply expect more from movies and from what I've seen, movies provide a greater and more consistent quality to them, imo. For example, as much as I love Monster or Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I've never seen an anime as powerful as, say, Bicycle Thief.

And on the point of anime movies, I'd rather not use them whatsoever into the discussion, because it would be confusing deciding whether it would count as a part of the movie or anime section, and such a discussion would be meaningless. Try not to use anime movies whatsoever.

Have you seen "Grave of the Fireflies"?

Anyway it depends. I went through a phase where I was watching Chinese and Japanese movies. Stuff by Kurosawa, Ozu, Ichikawa, Koreeda, Wong, Zhang.

Yes, I have. I always saw it in stuff like, most depressing movies and whatnot, but I never found it all that sad. Call me heartless if you will.

But now that I think about it, maybe powerful was a bad adjective, it was powerful, but it wasn't the main focal point. A good comparison for moving anti-war anime/movie stuff would be Schindler's List and Grave of the Fireflies, IMO. Although Schindler's List did drag on on the lolnaziskillpeople scenes.

This is like asking "What is better? Music or books?"
They're too different (err...varied) to compare with each other

What about Tokyo Story and Nobody Knows. Those are quite up there as well.

I personally don't think Schindlers List and GOTFF can be compared. Schindlers List (At least this is my opinion) is sentimental crap. It literally trys to hard. It's like "LOOK AT ME!! FEEL THE EMOTION!!! FEEL THE PAIN!!!" While Grave of the Fireflies is much more subtle and much more painful to watch (in a good way).

That is true, those little montages with the nazi's killing the Jewish people did drag on and eventually became redundant. And it did end up just being pretentious and trying to shove everything down my throat. But at least it created a good understanding of how it was like in Germany during World War II, if I were to attempt to look at it optimistically.

I watch more movies than anime. I also think these two forms of entertainment differ a lot to be a topic of comparison. Both forms are great in their own right.

Probably a tie for me I have some problems with a lot of the mainstream Hollywood stuff being released at the moment and anime is really good but just does not have the breadth of titles that have been released over the decades by film makers and a lot of those films have inspired anime so I guess I am leaning towards movies. If I had to choose between a particular company (Like Disney) and anime, hands down it would be anime.
