the main purposes of the services are not just the revenues from fees and advertising, but also the counterweight it provides against unauthorized fansub distribution.

To bad that by only allowing the Americans to see the shows they are pushing people over to fansubs instead of taking people away from them.

Great idea, poor utilized.

Well, You can't say No one had seen this coming. Anime sales in North America are pretty bad. That's only because of distributors who translate everything for us. Im not saying its all the Fansubbers fault. I love all the work fansubbers do for us but they receive little or no recognition. In average of every episode subbed, the fansubbers only get 100-500 thanks, compared to the 15000 views. And because of the Less-Than-Half-Ass-Job that 4Kids (May they burn in hell for ruining Melancholy of huruhi Suzumia), funimation, and other North American Distribution companies (See i wasn't blaming Fansubbers) little or no newer generation over-seas become interested. This causes huge drops in profits, so now it's better off if the TV stations just do direct business with Sites like Crunchyroll Where they can make money. Because of doing that, Not only will it become legal, but it will also help with the creation of more and more amazing anime titles. This is the next step for a greater and more efficient Globalization of anime.

Keisuke Iwata, the executive in charge of TV Tokyo's AT-X animation channel and its animation division, predicted in a Wednesday lecture that "the global marketplace for Japanese animation will shrink from 2010 onward." Iwata spoke at the "Anime Business Forum + 2009" event at Digital Hollywood's University of Digital Content in Tokyo.

In Iwata's view, there is no room for growth since Japanese animation has reached the saturation point in the global marketplace. Due to the worldwide recession and illegal net distribution, Iwata concluded that the North American marketplace is battered, the European marketplace is in grave condition, and the Japanese companies cannot rely on the Middle East, Asia, and other regions as potential new marketplaces. He added, "as it stands, we may have to go back to the way it was in the past — back to selling Japanese animation only to the Japanese marketplace." In order to survive in the current adverse climate, TV Tokyo is proceeding with new initiatives that include animation on American video-distribution sites.

So true....

I have to pay 2 or even 3 times what i normal movie would cost me, the prices is way to high for people to actually want to buy them. Get the prices down and you will see a increase in sales too.

As much of that is true~ Your missing the point of marketing.

The cost of import + the cost of translation + the cost of distribution = the base price of product.

and there needs to be profit. This is why sushi is cheap in japan, while sushi is expensive in North America. its considered Delicacy. Putting that into product terms, Exotic.
