Actually it aint much of a story so ill just post it here.

So many Malays and Chinese and British came to S'pore but they all could not communicate with each other...
so erm...they all tried to learn english...
Then the chinese did not really understand the english sentence structure so they simplified by using chinese grammer and then just replace the chinese words with english words...and as they also had learnt malays by living with them...they used some malay words and also chinese dilect to describe something that they did not know how to say in English. So ended up and some random erm mixed language mostly made up of english i guess...

uh huh. i guess it just kinda stuck after a while... but most people can easily switch between proper English and Singlish depending on the situation.

hehehe .. things are diffrent here .. we malaysian speaks manglish

Manglish is in there as well along with some words and grammar:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manglish

I don't see anything wrong with Singlish, but I think the Singapore government doesn't like it because it can make it harder for people to learn standard English. This is similar to how people in the US who grow up learning to speak a non-standard dialect of English (which we might refer to in general categories like "country", "redneck" or "jive") can have a harder time learning standard English.

Non-standard dialects are important for expressing group identity, so people will speak a dialect at home or with friends then switch to the standard form of a language in "serious" situations to show that they're "educated" and stuff.

One thing that you don't normally see that I heard of is that once on "Channel 5" in Singapore they were speaking a kind of Singlish or something in an effort not to seem too elitist or something. (At the time I think standard English was sort of associated with condescending British people or something.)
