You know it’s never really bothered me. I just look at it as an opportunity to learn a lot about history pertaining mainly to African Americans. It’s never had much more or less meaning than that to me.

However, a lot of white people seem to be getting mad about it. They say it’s discrimination, and when I think about it the truth is it does seem to further encourage the segregation of races. It seems to be a completely counter productive thing…

I’ve nothing for or against it. As long as they show civil war documentaries on the history channel (which is actually slightly inaccurate, but that’s part of what I like cuz then I get to go through my text books and make myself feel smart) then I’m happy.

Still, some people are saying it should be abolished. Maybe they are right… I don’t know. But, somebody recently put up a good argument about it. This chick was talking about it and a white chick got upset. The former chick wanting to defend her people’s holiday month quickly began to rant about how they were endlessly discriminated against and that’s what little they have to repent with. The latter countered, “Women were discriminated against throughout all history. If anything we should have a Woman History Month.”

Of course that has nothing to do with the wonderfully interesting civil war so I think that’s a bad idea. :p, actually its quite interesting learning about various women and their contributions to history. Some of them are quite amazing, though others are admittedly tedious to study. (Any of the queens of England, for example)

I think black history month is fine. They did recieve a lot of opression from the 1800's all the way into the 1960's. I am not black, so I wouldn't know if they felt this way. But putting a seperate month for black history seems kinda like segregation. Shouldn't we learn about history regardless of race all throughout the school year? It doesn't seem very fair to other races either. there isn't an asian, arab, latino, white, ect... month. Why should race be a factor in learning about history? If we are truly to abolish racism then we shouldn't segregate history.

I'm against it... most annoying month of the year. "Y'all made us slaves... and like we deserve a month... even 100 years from now.. we should still have it!!"

"Hey guys, this is a pep rally for Black History Month 2075. We're celebrating the freedom of the black people over 100 years after they had their rights. 100 years may seem long to you, but..... it's shorter than you think............ or actually longer.... But somehow they still have February as Black History Months so........ ummm.... WOOO....WOOO!!"

You do know black history month isn't made for blacks right. It was made so mainly whites knew about black history. I mean since the other 11 months your pretty much just learning mostly white history. Just to restate black history month is mainly for whites to get the opportunity to learn about black history since they no longer teach about it in most school curriculum's. American's seem to try to not talk about slavery because it wasn't a good part of American history.

Black History Month is not about discrimination or past slavery. Black History Month is for, as the name suggest, black history. And yes, its not only for black people, its for everyone whose interested in black history. I remember taking a African-American history class during college, and it was quite interesting. You'd be surprised at how many white people take those classes.

Actually, my school teaches the snot out of slavery… I just drone off when they do, cuz it’s mostly just a bunch of white bashing…

I dunno, mostly in history class we learn about Persia, Egypt, Asia, evolution of man, and the likes… We have a brief American history class dominated with whites, but even that has a section dedicated to blacks for every various time period. And it talks about the Civil War, which is the only chapter I’ve actually read. (Sorry, but American history is sooo dull to me. Sept Civil War and brief parts of WWII and Revolutionary War. I like modern politics though, but American history focuses on like… Immigration of Irishmen and the building of sky-scrapers and digging of mines… OH! I also like learning about Wyatt Erp (SP?) and Doc Holliday and other gun men! Wyatt was such a bad @ss! he got in more documented gun fights than anyone else in human history and never once got shot!

But yeah, to be honest, I don’t think those other eleven months are dedicated to whites. I think whites make more appearances than blacks, but if we’re going to try and teach the history of minorities that don’t appear often in the school programs I’d love to learn about Swedish history (maybe) or.. I dunno, Jewish History that isn’t completely dominated by WWII. Heck, the Muslims may even have an interesting history. I dunno. Nobody seems to care about those.

I changed my avatar for 2 reasons. 1. The other one had Naruto on it, so a bunch of random 13 year olds kept trying to buddy me. 2. This one actually has something to do with my name.

But, honestly, there are some interesting aspects in black history.

Right...

1. well most ppl look at it as a way to learn more about blacks history, b/c there is so little taught in schools

2. I don't like it b/c you only hear about the same ppl every month so its lost its productiveness and it was getting annoying every feb to write poems or w.e in ode to MLK JR

3. Blacks aren't the only ones who make themselves racist wtf kind of statement was that anyway....

4. Please don't pretend that blacks are the only ones who stereotype

not all of us think that way, I think that black pride parades and gay pride parades, and black this and black that do only further seperate races, b/c if whites did the same thing then they are called racist, or its unjust

but to give honor to blacks that were opressed (its not really meant for present blacks but those who worked to get us were we are today) theres nothing wrong with that, there are a lot of holidays in honor of other things, I just think they should have like four months for Native Americans, and Eventually when the world stops being predjudice a month for Gays

EDIT:
and if you only got nothing but white bashing out of ur history class in the one week they spend on black history then u should have listened better b/c not all whites were considered bad then, just assholes are assholes...there were plenty of whites that helped blacks...

and sorry hun its not just history they teach you get ur head out of the clouds, they go into more depth about everything else and leave out a lot of things that envolvled blacks, thats why they have African american history classes...seriously you couldnt live in a smaller box

Whoa there! So what are you suggesting? Are we just supposed to forget 400 years of oppression? To forget about all those that suffered during those terrible times?
Well, do you know what I think? This is what I think!:

Sucks though but you're right there will probably never be true equality all we can do is try. I remember after 911 everyone in America accepted one another. This usually happens after a national crisis, but in about 2 weeks they find out that they were from the middle east which started up a lot of racism with middle easterners living in America. To the point where they wouldn't allow some of them on airplanes without doing major security checks on them.
