[Info] Kim Jae Joong's Real Birthday Date

According to Jaejoong's birth mother, Jaejoong's actual birthdate is the 4th of Feb. She revealed it on her blog sometime in January.

She posted Jaejoong's baby pictures Jaejoong's baby pictures and stated that his birthday was on the 4th of Feb but changed it to 26th Jan for auspicious reasons.

Apparently, if Jaejoong's birthday was recorded as the 4th of Feb, it would bring him bad luck.

[News] TVXQ Captivates Japan

What’s there to say about TVXQ? Not much. They don’t need any explanation. They are dominating the music scene in Korea, and there is no boy band that can compete. Well, this will most likely be the situation for them in Japan as well.

The K-pop group’s latest Japanese single Mirotic became the Gold seller of the year in 2008. The Recording Industry Association of Japan analyzes annual album sales and certifies performers with different titles. Million goes to a record that sells over 1 million copies. Platinum goes to a record with 250,000 sales. And Gold is given for 100,000 sales.

Although TVXQ placed third on the certificate, it is quite an achievement for a Korean group. Million sellers for 2008 went to seven albums by Japanese superstars such as Hikaru Utada and Anmie Amuro.

You can say that TVXQ is now bumping shoulders with Japan’s top-notch. In September of 2008, Mirotic was released as TVXQ’s fourth album. In 103 days, the album sold over 500,000 copies. Let’s hope for TVXQ’s success in Japan. Good work guys!

[News] Korean Music Awards Excludes Idol Singers from Nomination.. Their Argument?

At the announcement of the 2009 Korean Music Awards Nominees, nearly all ‘idol’ singers were noticeably absent from the list of nominees.

At the press conference for the 6th Annual Korean Music Awards—which was held at 10:30 A.M. on February 4 at the Seoul Joong-Gu TaePyong Korea Press Center—both a general outline for the upcoming ceremony and a list of nominees by category were announced.

Nominees in competition for the 2009 Korean Music Awards were selected from a review of songs and albums released domestically starting November 1, 2007 through October 31, 2008. Sister’s Barbershop’s ‘Most Ordinary Existence’ was nominated in a total of 5 categories including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Modern Rock Album and Best Modern Rock Song. Galaxy Express, Verbal Jint, Toy, Kim DongRyul, and W&Whale each received nominations in 4 categories. However, it was difficult to find the names of any of the so-called ‘idol’ singers among them.

Neither Seo Taiji’s first single from his 8th album nor Rain’s 5th album ‘Rainism’ earned nominations. TVXQ and Big Bang, each of whom drew a lot of popularity in the last year, were excluded from the list of nominees as their album release dates were November 12 and November 5 respectively.

The Wonder Girls received nominations in two categories including Song of the Year and Best Dance & Electronic Song, as well as a nomination in the Netizen’s Artist of Year category. Lee HyoRi’s earned her a nomination in the Best Dance & Electronic Song category. Big Bang’s TaeYang became a nominee in both the Best R&B/Soul Album and Best R&B/Soul Song categories, but Big Bang was unable to earn nominations in any of the categories.

A representative for the Korean Music Awards revealed, “The idea that the Korean Music Awards is biased towards indie music while giving mainstream music the cold shoulder is a misconception. The judging committee isn’t merely a group that makes its evaluations based on a single opinion or point-of-view. The nominees are selected in a collective evaluative process by a committee of 52 judges with a variety of perspectives.” The representative added, “No other aspect besides music is considered when selecting nominees. Musical value and the final product are the main concerns during evaluation.”

The Korean Music Awards seeks to treat music as more than a mere form of amusement but as an art, and musicians as artists instead of entertainers. With such a basis, more attention is paid to albums and songs rather than singers, and musical achievement represents the standard rather than sales figures. The ultimate goal of the Korean Music Awards is to move beyond the mainstream vs. independent debate and to create a foundation upon which Korean music can progress in a balanced, positive manner.

Music critics, journalists specializing in music, music producers, members of academia and of the public specializing in music, will all participate in the selection process by reviewing music released in the past year. Netizen voting will also be reflected.

The Korean Music Awards will take place at KonKuk University’s New Millenium Hall. Yoon DoHyun will host to the ceremony and Achievement Award winner, SanUlLim’s Kim ChangWan, will perform.

[News//Rumour?] Leader U-know Yunho from TVXQ is going to render compulsory military service in Korea??

According to a lot of fan sites, Leader U-know Yunho from TVXQ has received a letter requesting him to render compulsory military service in Korea as most males ages 19-22 (of Korean nationality) will face in the country.

This 5-unit all-male group originated from Korea under SM Entertainment now has moved to Japan under the Rhythm Zone label (avex group) and has enjoyed a big fandom in East Asia, doing concerts in countries like China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

This wasn't the first time a Korean male celebrity was drafted into the military. The R&B group in Korea, G.O.D., had been drafted more than a year ago and has disbanded ever since. Shinhwa, another all-male group also from SM Entertainment had also been requested to serve but will enlist on 2008.

It has been discussed that if ever one of the members of TVXQ will have to render military service, the group plans to sign-up together. Some fans have also said that Hero Jaejoong, another member of the group, might not be required to render service because of a rule exempts the 'only son' of Korean families.

[News] Update on Korea’s Music Globalization

Earlier this week, I revealed that Korea’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism was about to launch a mission to globalize Korean music. A meeting was hosted by several government officials on February 4th at one of SM Entertainment's branches, where Minister Yoo laid out his plans for promoting and spreading Korean music across the borders. He appointed DBSK, Wonder Girls, Rain, Big Bang, and SNSD as ambassadors, although not all members were present at the meeting.

One of the main goals on the minister’s agenda is to establish a qualified, creditable Korean music chart, like USA’s Billboards, Great Britain’s UK, and Japan’s Oricon charts. Minister Yoo and his team of experts will also develop and reconfigure award fields and criteria, methods of in-depth judging and reviews, and figure out how to operate the new Kpop chart to launch something like “Korea’s Grammy Awards” as well. Of course Korea already has many awards for singers and musicians, but it seems like he REALLY wants to be able to compete with America and what not. And how is this going to help ‘spread the word’ past China, exactly?

Over the next 5 years, up to 127,500,000,000 Won out of the treasury will be committed to the project. That’s over 92 million dollars! Call me crazy, but I think they can find far better uses for that money than showing the world how great Korean music is (which IS awesome, don’t get me wrong). This just goes to show how serious they are. Forget globalization, they’re making war on all the other music industries of the world. Part of the money (about 7 million USD) are already being used to remodel the MoonHwa Contest Hall and the Olympic Hall in Seoul; the revamped buildings will be ready to use (ie for concerts) by December of this year. All because the stadiums aren’t flashy and fancy enough as of now.

That’s not all. As some of you may know, 2-year military service in Korea is compulsory. Many bands have been broken up or forced to delay activities due to the required military service (think Shinhwa), although some artists such as Kim Jong Kook have made successful comebacks even after disappearing from the entertainment scene for two years. Minister Yoo is thinking of allowing artists to delay their service indefinitely or even skip out completely. The minister’s point is that he needs the young stars while they’re still young and talented, to be able to take on busy schedules, unhindered by age. Understandably many Korean citizen have protested his proposal, claiming that making exceptions can lead to big problems, and that as idols they should be setting good examples by doing their duty to their country. All the more reason to become a celebrity, I guess.

Sorry fans, no word as of yet on any activities outside of Korea. It seems like they're concentrating on improving the industry from the inside out, which makes sense if you look at it from the long-term point of view. But so much money! Darn you LSM and JYP for giving the government such crazy ideas! Is Korea's recession proof or something? Last time I checked, they weren't doing so hot. I agree that it is important to be aware of other cultures, and I applaud Korea’s attempts to claim their place in the ever competitive, forever changing music industry. The world should know Korea’s got great music and unique culture. And seeing the lack of qualms about spending so much money on this project, it’s probably not all about profits either. But honestly, I have a feeling they’re going way overboard with this whole globalization thing.

[News] Top Korea, Japan Idol Groups Share Talk Show

The top pop groups of Korea and Japan--DBSK (or TVXQ) and SMAP--have met on a Japanese program.

DBSK on Jan. 29 joined the recording of the popular show "SMAP×SMAP" on Fuji TV, hosted by SMAP. In a friendly atmosphere, the two groups talked and sang together. The program airs next month.

Previously, top Korean stars such as Jang Dong-geon, Song Seung-heon, Lee Young-ae, Choi Ji-woo, Ryu Si-won, Gwon Sang-woo and Sin Hye-seong appeared in the program's "Bistro SMAP" segment. Sin notably sang a live duet with SMAP member Kusanagi Tsuyoshi.

The two top groups had already met Dec. 31 during an NHK year-end pop festival, the most prestigious of its kind in Japan. The two groups briefly met during rehearsals and DBSK later went to SMAP's room for a formal greeting.

SMAP member Takuya Kimura talked about that first encounter on a radio show last month. He laughingly said, "The room was small for ten healthy men. It was suffocating. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi's supposed Korean skills didn't really come out."

The Korean group's appearance on "SMAP×SMAP" is as significant as their first meeting last month.

Japan's Johnny's Entertainment manages not only SMAP but many other top notch idol groups including KinKi Kids. It maintains their popularity by having group members host shows on all private broadcasts.

DBSK is also scheduled to appear soon on a Fuji TV show hosted by the KinKi Kids (Domoto Koichi, Domoto Tsuyoshi). The "honeymoon affair" between DBSK and Johnny's is expected to continue for quite some time.

[Info] DBSK On Japanese TV Programme

DBSK will be appearing on a Japanese TV Programme "Oshareizumu". The broadcast date is not known yet. This is a show under Japan's NTV and is broadcast on weekdays from 2200-2230. Various artists such as CHEMISTRY, Jun Masamoto, Shun Oguri and many others have been on the show before. This show will focus mainly on conversation with the artists, therefore the boys probably won't be singing.

[Translation] FM Yokohama Asian Groove - Yunho

TVXQ: We are TVXQ. Moo~ (imitates a cow). "This year, we will work hard too" series.

DJ: What is something you want to challenge in 2009?
YH: If I have time, I'd like to try some new, interesting sports.
DJ: Last week Changmin-kun said he wanted to challenge the butterfly stroke.
YH: I would like to try snowboarding it it were me. I've fallen in love with it recently, and would really like to have some practice at it.
DJ: Where in Korea do you go to if you want to snowboard?
YH: There are many places. For example, there is a place called "yonpyon" which you can go to.
DJ: So that means you can snowboard to your heart's content there?
YH: You can say that. Snowboard and enjoy the wind at the same time.
DJ: Don't get injured ah.
YH: I will take good care.

---- Good Guy Test
DJ: You saw a really cute girl on your date, and you're watching her so intently that there is a scary look on your girlfriend's face. Please say something at this point in time.
YH: If its like that, I would say, "I'm thinking about the past." If she asked me what I was thinking, I'd say something like, "Her clothes are the same as the ones you wore"...
DJ: Ah~~ But your facial expression really looks as if that girl is very cute.
YH: Ah~~ But I still think my girlfriend is the best!
DJ: Um, that means you will give her an explanation right.
YH: Yes, that is so.
DJ: The two of you are attending a party and she dressed up really grandly for the occasion. However, you really do not feel like going to the party. What would you do at this point in time?
YH: If it were me, I would still go with her. I'd be fine with it as long as she likes it.
DJ: How would you feel towards her?
YH: Eh, I think I like her.
DJ: Maybe the girl would be really happy.
YH: Ah, thank you.
DJ: Your ex-girlfriend dropped her handkerchief in your room and your girlfriend found it. What would you do now?
YH: I would be honest with her.
DJ: Your answer seems the same as Jaejoong-kun's.
YH: Ah ah ah~ Although I'd be honest, I wouldn't be completely open about it. I'd say, "I got this from the most important person to me".
DJ: Ah, so you'd tell a white lie that its your mother's?
YH: Yes. Otherwise the other party will feel hurt easily. So its better to tell a white lie.
DJ: You went to watch a sports match, and you are so into the game that you totally neglected and forgot your girlfriend beside you, who looks utterly bored. What would you do now?
YH: "Are you feeling very bored?" If she is, I'd say, "Let's go home now, I'm alright."
DJ: You'll really go back?
YH: I'm alright.
DJ: Even if its the last ten minutes, and the atmosphere is running high?
YH: Yeah, because she doesn't like it.
DJ: Aiya, really?
YH: Isn't it obvious!! Doesn't this happen all the time??
DJ: Confession Time. Please say a line which you consider to be most romantic.
YH: It's really cold, grab my hand and I will never let go of yours.
