So the other day i was parusing the online manga site i use, and i noticed that there was a shotacon section... and well... since i've been called a shotacon (i like younger guys... not that hard when you get to be my age) i thought, what the heck, i'll read one, and see what it's all about...

uhm...

I was positively SHOCKED at what i saw... i mean, i never really thought about shotacons being for like... LITTLE BOYS.. .i mean, like children little boys, not young teens... it threw me for a loop, and like the car accident on the side of the road, i couldn't stop reading

I'm now officially scarred, but i was wondering if there were people who enjoyed reading that type of manga, or if there was some sort of redeeming quality that i was just too offended ("let uncle suck out the poison") to see...

It depends what shotacon the manga is...
I don't like to read hardcore stuff...I believe ink and paper are just ink and paper but still tooooo shotacon stories make me feel weird...

But I really like mangas where the main characters aren't looking that young ( they should at least look like they are 12-14^^U ) and the plot is mostly shounen ai...

I don't think shotacon or lolicon were 'bad things' to be ashamed or afraid about, 'cause the attraction to the characters comes from their mesures...The small body, big eyes, big heads are always considered as cute so the reason we read it is because the cuteness...( At least I hope I'm not the only one who reads shota/loli because of that reason...LoL)
Especially we, girls are affected by cuteness...

The main question one should ask him/herself about shota/loli is...Am I attracted to the fact that these characters are put into a romantic/sexual situation or I would read the manga even if the characters were the same but the genre would be different with no romantic/sexual content...

Those who answer that they would read the manga with a different genre, are totally okay

hmm a well thought explainantion,

clearly a subsection of japanese culture have a very different perception of sexuality and indeed morality compared to western philosophies. whilst i, being western find the notion of a child, boy or girl commiting sexual acts with adults to be repugnant, i recognize that it is not so unrealistic for a young person to have feelings toward and older person. Even if they did not understand those feelings fully, if it was in culture that reinforced them rather than was morally opposed to them you can see how certain situations can occur...

what worries me is if people, fully knowing these implications, decide to sub shots/lolicon manga so that more children (and adults) can access them. Then it becomes not a subculture in a single country but somehow it becomes acceptable. People today don't listen to their parents, they (as this website proves) read manga on the internet and then chat about it.

whilst i would never advocate censorship, it is important for people to have perspective.

Well depends on your definition of shotacon. If you simply mean the male is younger than the female by a decent amount, than yes i have read some. Example: Unbalance X Unbalance. Though if you mean like little kids or any guy x guy action then definitely no.

It's the same as lolicon.

Shota and loli are always underaged and generally depicted as pre-pubescent.

i love shotacons- but not those shounen-ai or very mature ones!
i have read shotacon mangas such as The Demon Within, Kimi wa Boku no Mono, Dear Mine and Yoru Made Matenai-though the latter was labeled ''mature'' and some has smutty scenes but it's still nice and cute for me..
I hope I won't develop a complex heheh..

I dislike Shotacon where the boys look like girls. (Just putting that out there.)

But no, I haven't read much shotacon. I'm not against it, but like with Yaoi/Shonen-Ai, it's hard to find a Shotacon with an actual plot to go with it.

Oh, and I watched Loveless and am currently reading it, but I don't really consider it a Shota. I guess Ritsuka could be considered as one, I just have trouble seeing it that way.
