UGGGH not a good combo trust me. On the other hand I also abhor (vocab word!) arrogant/all powerful guys...you know, the ones that apparently have no weakness or fault except towards the girl they like. Does that mean you don't like Hana Yori Dango? uh...i haven't seen\read it |

I like good artwork and art styles.
And I hate generic plots and characters. And there has to be at least a little romance in it for me to be able to read it. |

I usually get very turned off by bad art.... but if im bored and keep hallucinating im seeing the name of the manga everywhere ill say "FINE ILL READ IT" and I usually end up loving it...
this was for Hana Yori Dango especially... the beginning art is awful as its old, but it later becomes gourgeous! I love Tsukasas hair XD |
How you doing? ;)

Yes same here, I can't read a manga with horrible art unless it has an interesting storyline. But it doesn't work the other way round, I can continue reading manga with a lousy plot if the art's gorgeous. I usually go by genres, either seinen or shoujo (although most of the stuff here are pretty generic) / josei. The things that turn me off the most are corny or cliched scenes, excessive violence (like Gantz) and sexual objectification (which happens a lot!).

I'm so picky I sometimes end up frustrated w/ nothing to read. It has to have good artwork, good main character, and a good story.
If I can't stand the main character I often drop the story (usually the case for many shoujos---seriously most of them seem like single-cell organisms). I dislike harem, typical shoujo, and overly violent/fanservice mangas. I never touch horror, cuz I know I'd get scared. As for shallowness, I generally despise it, except when it comes to my guilty pleasures (e.g. Hana Kimi...the male characters are all too goodlooking to drop, even when Mitsuki's the usual boring shoujo heroine). Funny pairings, gender bender (not harem), and samurais (I'm like a bee to a flower whenever I see something feudal Japan) too. |

applejello wrote: I am pretty picky about my manga: it has to include a plot that intrigues me, good artwork - I usually like the popular genres of romance and comedy, but I'm pretty open to drama, psychological, shojo, school life, even shonen-ai in some cases. However, if I don`t like the plot, the artwork won`t matter, and neither will popularity- (Full Moon ,Kitchen Princess, Love Monster, Vampire Knight, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, Tail of the Moon, Special A, Gentlemen`s Alliance, Ai Wo Utau Yori Ore Ni Oborero, Bleach, Naruto, Shugo Chara, Code Geass, It's Love, Hot Blooded Woman and Fruits Basket after a while- even Skip Beat and Katekyoshi Hitman Reborn are leaning in that direction- to name a few.) I usually ignore vampire romances, magical girl plots. If the plot is creative, like Kami no Mizo Shiru Sekai or Yankee-kun to Megane-chan, then accepting artwork that generally differs from my normal manga pool (ex. Gintama, Superior) is fine. Even if I prefer another pairing over the intended pairing, I will still read it. And I also judge the manga by the cover and the summary. If I don`t like it at first glace, it immediately goes into the veto pool (where I will pick it up for a later evaluation when my favourites have no updates). Obscenity usually makes the manga less interesting. I don't really mind the elogated fight scenes if they're interesting. People getting too many new powers too soon irritate me too (notice the repition, lolz? ![]() ![]() ![]() Wow, that's a whole lot of criteria! But I pretty much agree with you here and there, especially about the "cool prince" types, I'm glad that there's someone else who finds them, as well as the girls' reaction to their presence, incredibly annoying. You might want to try "Akuma To Love Song", it's a shoujo manga that surprised me with its depth, plus the main guy is not exactly popular and prefers to stay away from the limelight. For shoujo manga, the deciding factor for me would be the female protagonist. If she's completely weak and helpless, incapable of making any decisions on her own and boy-crazy, then I'll stop reading. |

yes!
has to have good art work, good plot, and dynamic charaters. also, has to be at least 5 volumes or more. I don't like short stories. for shojo, I only like the ones that have a cool or nice lead girl, those girls searching for love-types get on my nerves, ![]() |
