We all dream A LOT more than we can remember or be aware of. If we didn't dream, our brains would go crazy and god knows what would happen. Dreaming acts as a filter for the things that we have accumulated throughout the day(s). I don't think dreaming is to give us hope, make us happy, or anything like that. So what the hell are bad dreams for? I have a dream that someone with a knife is stabbing my chest. Do I hope for no one to stab me? Is it to make me happy that I wasn't stabbed when I wake up?

I think not having our heads explode is a way better purpose than anything else we might think of.

Mm...I think dreams often play out scenarios in our life that have happened or that we are anticipating. Also, they may encompass things that we've viewed on TV or seen in games and other types of media. I have a hard time trying to figure them out though. A lot of my dreams are a bit odd (ie: driving my car on a roller coaster track eventually leading up to a mansion where I have to slay a dragon with a blue sword o_o;;).

Dreams are a way to teach us lessons that are to dangerous to teach us in reality. We can still get the experience by dreaming it, but we don't get put into such danger. They can teach us to be well prepared, and to be cautious. =]

that is probably the closest answer to what the purpose of dreams are.

why we dream is a long, boring, and technical explanation that I dont want to get into on a friday night

I'm still gonna stick with "preventing our heads from exploding" answer.
