My mom said back then she can't go to college because she doesn't have money. And she married at just 18 years old. She said that I'm very lucky to live in America because I can have opportunities to go to college and have a successful career. I think this why most Asian parents want their children to work hard in school because they don't want their children to have to go through tough time as them.

Have your parents or anyone ever used the "Back then we..." or "In the <country name>, we..." thing on you???
I'm wondering because I'm Filipino, and I'm not sure if we are the most affected by this thing or not so I'm just stating it out, and when I'm playing video games and they'd say it's dinner time, and I'd say "I just ate" or "I'm not hungry" they'd say something like this:
"Back then, we had to work HARD to grow our own food, we'd raise our chickens and pigs healthily until they were big enough for our entire family, or cook them when they die naturally. Everyday, we'd get the water buffalos out to plow the rice fields so we have enough rice to last. You're very lucky to be able to eat everyday."
Or something like that. And when you are outside playing and they want you to go back in and you want to play oustide still, they'd say:
"Back then, if we stayed this long outside, we'd already be dead. There were so many bad people on the streets back then."
or more popular:
"Back then, we worked every day from the crack of dawn until the sun came down, we were always very tired after the day, just to make a daily living. Our house was just bamboo tied on together, we would always be stung my mosquitoes...."
And so on.

I was just wondering if any of you ever heard this guilt trip from your parents or something.

BTW, I'm an immigrant, that's why I didn't use the, "Back in the <country name>, we..." Technique.

Edit: Please also include an example. I like hearing these funny moments.

well my parents always used the "back when i was a kid, we had to walk to school. uphill both ways, in the blinding snow!"

and then when i ask my grandmother what it was like for my dad to go to school, i discovered that they lived across the street from the school.... >.>

I hate that. Like when they say "back when we..." IT'S SO ANNOYING. I don't want to learn about your past life, am I supposed to feel sorry for you?! If you've freakin' suffered so much then why let your kids go through your hell?

=_=;; I really hate their whining and bitching.

This shit used too happen way back.
My old man would go on 4 days. I slowly died inside listening to that shit 4 hours.
Until I got my first music player...

yes plenty of times...

"back then you'll get a whipping for talking back."
"in vietnam, there's a lot of people who have no food to eat so why are you wasting food?"
"in vietnam, there are people who don't have enough clothes to wear so why aren't you wearing the clothes i bought you? i should just let you go out naked in public..."
"back then we went through a lot of hardships to get over here so do good in school."
"back then while we were trying to come to the u.s. all we had were 7 bags of noodles and had to use the the seasoning to make soup..."

what my parents say to me and my sisters all the time and occasionally still do....

yes
when i was complaining about having to wake up early everyday for school, my mom would go "when i was your age, my school was in another city and i had to wake up at 5 to take the bus there." if i complain about teachers being too strict, she'll say that her teachers used to hit them if they got an answer wrong or give out punishments like standing/squatting in the corner for a few hours. my dad would say that the troublemakers in his class would make them hold a bucket of urine over their heads and if it dropped, it was too bad.
i've heard this many times, but i guess i'm used to it and understand how different our worlds are.
