What does the word 'sempai' mean?

I heard it on an Anime onces I think it's Fruits Basket. what does the word 'sempai' mean? or maybe I got it confuse by senpai.


I search google but they don't have the answer

senpai = senior

also applies to workplace and other places not just schools.. btw even if it's someone younger than you but got there first. he/she by default is a senpai. like my workplace i've got guys older than me but under me coz' i'm the senior apprentice, not them

"sempai" means upperclassman [senior], use to address a person superior to you (work, class etc.).
and the opposite of that is [kouhai] the junior or inferior..

It means senior... either in life (age) or at school,work (upperclassman).

When a younger classmen allowed to say Sempai to upper classmen. Sempai means senior.

i thought it was like.. just some term of politeness towards someone older than you?
kind of like.. kuya and ate in tagalog. but i dont really know what sempai means, XD that was just a guess.
