Does .9999...=1?
Posted 12/19/07 , edited 12/19/07
I have seen this discussed on many forums and didn't see one on CR so I decided to make one to get the CR communities opinions.

What the question is if .9999... is equal to one or not.

If you don't understand, here are a few links that might help.

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/howcan1.htm
http://polymathematics.typepad.com/polymath/2006/06/no_im_sorry_it_.html

I personally think it is. I mean whats the difference between .9999... and one? An infinitely long string of zeros with a one at the end?

A few of my friends disagree with me and think that it doesn't.

What do you think?

.9999... not .9999

The '...' means that it is repeating, going on forever.

Technically I don't think .9999...=1. Why? Cuz it's like saying .888...=1 also, which clearly it doesn't cuz it is missing one more digit to become the next whole number. Also the fact that it's infinite means that it can not add one more digit to it thus it can not become a whole number. Well that is it ur dealing w/ non-rounding, yea .9999 can = 1 just round up :P

Edit: Oops the page didn't refresh while i was reading + typing my post so i didn't see the end of thread

Not the same. What you're doing is a limit approximation.

I guess It all depends on what u meen. If u meen .9999 = 1 Your wrong.
But did you meen .9999' the ' signifying an endless number.
Then I guess I might sway towards it being 1 .
But then again it being ENDLESS Would me that it equals a never ending number therefore it couldn't equal 1
The only way either of them would equal 1 is if you are ROUNDING
You get what I meen?
