The third mobile suit developed under the Earth Federation's top-secret "Project V," the RX-78 Gundam series saw final assembly and rollout at the Side 7 colony under the supervision of engineer Lieutenant Tem Ray. Three prototypes were constructed, although only one unit, the RX-78-2, survived a Zeon attack on Side 7 when Project V was discovered by Zeon Lieutenant Commander Char Aznable. The RX-78-2, having been commandeered by Ray's young son Amuro, fended off the attack and was transferred to the assault carrier White Base. Amuro Ray would continue to serve as the Gundam's pilot for the remainder of the One Year War, being White Base's mobile front line of defense.

The Gundam was designed as a fast, close-combat mobile suit and was the first to feature several new technologies, including the energy cap-based beam rifle (making the Gundam the first mobile suit to pack the firepower of a battleship) and beam saber. Although designed with "high performance" in mind, the Gundam was simply outmatched by its own pilot: Amuro's emerging Newtype abilities would increasingly allow him to push the Gundam beyond its design limits. This had the often-annoying result of the Gundam's motors and joints getting burned-out or overloaded simply because it couldn't keep up with Amuro's reflexes. A later field upgrade which involved coating the joints with an electromagnetic solution, thus reducing the motors' and joints' friction, increased the Gundam's performance to a point where it could keep up with Amuro's reaction time. Another factor that contributed to the Gundam's success was its "learning computer" system, which allowed the mobile suit to "learn" from - and adapt to - the pilot's input. The data from the learning computer system would later be incorporated into the Federation's first mass-production model mobile suit, the RGM-79 GM.

The Gundam's service record - and that of Amuro Ray - would continually draw the attention of the Zeon forces - and particularly Char Aznable - until the end of the war... thus providing the distraction the Federation military needed to complete construction of its GM units at its Jaburo base on Earth. The Gundam was finally destroyed at the Battle of A Bao A Qu in a fight against Char Aznable, piloting the MSN-02 Zeong mobile suit, although Amuro survived. As fate would have it, of course, the Gundam itself would become the most famous mobile suit of the One Year War - even more famous than its young pilot, Amuro Ray, whose own abilities were the keys to the Gundam's performance, perhaps more so than the abilities of the Gundam itself
Pilot: Amuro Ray

After successfully stealing four of the Earth Alliance's prototype Gundam mobile suits, ZAFT reverse engineers them and incorporates new technologies such as Phase Shift armor and beam sabers into their own mobile suits. With these new technologies, ZAFT also builds several Gundams of their own under the direction of leader Patrick Zala. Unlike previous Gundam designs, these new units feature a dangerous new technology: the N-Jammer Canceler. ZAFT originally develops the N-Jammer to prevent the Alliance from using nuclear weapons, but this also means that mobile suits have to be powered by short life energy batteries. By creating the N-Jammer Canceler, a mobile suit can use a nuclear fission reactor and function for a nearly unlimited amount of time even with Phase Shift armor activated. Unfortunately, the N-Jammer Canceler technology proves to be a Pandora's Box that falls into the wrong hands.

The ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam is one of the new Gundam designs built by ZAFT. The Freedom Gundam is equipped with a wide variety of powerful weapons for use in its HiMAT (High Mobility Aerial Tactics) mode. One of these weapons is the twin "Balaena" plasma beam cannons, which are stored in the wings and mounted over the shoulders during use. The Freedom Gundam's other main armament consists of twin hip-mounted "Xiphias" rail cannons. Other standard armaments include head vulcans, twin beam sabers and a beam rifle. The Freedom Gundam is also capable of using something far more powerful: the METEOR support system. This mobile weapons platform is designed specifically for use by the Freedom Gundam and ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam and is stored aboard the support ship Eternal. By using the METEOR, the Freedom Gundam can deliver a blitzkrieg attack utilizing various cannons, missile launchers and two long beam swords.

The Freedom Gundam is first used in May C.E. 71 when Kira Yamato steals it with the help of Lacus Clyne. Kira uses his new suit to travel to Earth and join the battle between ZAFT and the Alliance at Alaska. Following the battle, Kira rejoins his comrades on the Archangel and travels to Orb after Murrue Ramius decides to defect from the Alliance. There, Kira fights to protect Orb from the Alliance and is later joined by his old friend and former enemy Athrun Zala piloting his new ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam. Following the defeat of Orb, Kira returns to space and is joined by Lacus Clyne and her stolen support ship Eternal, which provides Kira with his METEOR support system. Along with Athrun, Kira uses his METEOR to save the PLANTs from destruction by nuclear missiles. At the war's end on September 27, the Freedom Gundam is heavily damaged in a battle against Rau Le Creuset's ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam. After the war, the Freedom Gundam is secretly repaired and hidden in Orb. In late C.E. 73, the Freedom Gundam is reactivated by Kira to fight off a squad of UMF/SS0-3 ASH mobile suits used by a group of special ops Coordinators sent to assassinate Lacus. In early C.E. 74, PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal orders the destruction of the Archangel and Freedom Gundam after their interference in several battles between the Alliance and ZAFT. Soon after, ZAFT then initiates "Operation Angel Down," and during that battle the Freedom Gundam is destroyed by Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam.
Pilot: Kira Yamato.

Those were 2 of the greatest MS of Gundam history.

Technical and Historical Notes

In response to the rise of Char Aznable's second Neo Zeon movement in the early UC 0090s, the Earth Federation created a special task force called "Londo Bell" to investigate and stop the new rebellion. One of Londo Bell's mobile suit pilots was famed One Year War ace Amuro Ray, whose Newtype abilities would need to be used to their fullest potential to stop Char's forces. Londo Bell commissioned Anaheim Electronics to build a new Gundam-type mobile suit for Amuro's use, incorporating the latest in psychic communication technology. Anaheim's result was the RX-93 n Gundam (n being the Greek symbol "nu"). The n Gundam's basic design was created by Amuro himself, but construction and final modifications were supervised by Anaheim engineer October. October incorporated the lastest piece of psychic communication technology - supposedly leaked to Anaheim by Char's Neo Zeon - called the "psycoframe." Composed of microscopic-sized psycommu receptor chips, October incorporated the new psycoframe technology into the n Gundam's cockpit frame, not only reducing its total weight but giving the pilot an edge in being able to more easily read an enemy's thoughts and movements.

However, Char's forces began to move quickly, and the final rollout date for the n Gundam was moved up. Amuro took posession of the n Gundam and returned to the Londo Bell task force to prepare his new mobile suit for the coming fight with Char Aznable. Along with the psycoframe, the n Gundam was also equipped with six "fin funnels," a new evolution in Newtype-controlled remote weaponry. Although they were technically "bits" and not "funnels" (since the fin funnels had their own onboard reactors for power), they were far more advanced than normal bits or funnels in that, in addition to serving as remote beam weapons, they could also be used in geometric formations to create a "beam barrier", offering a target 360 degrees of protection against most weapons fire. By combining these advanced remote weapons with a Newtype pilot's psycoframe-enhanced abilities, the n Gundam proved to be an unstoppable foe for the common Neo Zeon pilot.

Unfortunately, the psycoframe advantage also had its drawbacks. October had warned Amuro that the psycoframe could create "powerful unknown phenomenae," and this proved true when Amuro attempted to use the n Gundam to singlehandedly stop half of the asteroid base Axis from falling on Earth. When other mobile suit pilots joined in the effort to push the giant rock from its decaying orbit, the concentration of so many minds on a single task caused n Gundam's psycoframe cockpit to overload, resulting in the mobile suit's destruction... and Earth's salvation as Axis was pushed away by the overwhelming psychic force.

Technical and Historical Notes

During the First Earth/ZAFT War in C.E. 71, ZAFT's ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam comes to be known as one of the most powerful mobile suits ever created. In the last stages of the war, ZAFT creates a successor unit, the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam. However, the Strike Freedom is stolen before its completion by Terminal, a secret organization associated with followers of Lacus Clyne. Although ZAFT's original plan was to produce multiple units with overwhelming firepower, the stolen unit is instead refined for use by the Freedom Gundam's former pilot, Kira Yamato. The Strike Freedom is a major improvement over the original Freedom Gundam in various respects. The wings feature new high output thrusters developed from the "Voiture Lumiere" propulsion system used by the GSX-401FW Stargazer. A similar propulsion system is used by ZAFT's ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam. The Strike Freedom is powered by the hyper deuterion nuclear reactor technology developed by ZAFT. This new design stores power in deuterion form, providing a continuous deuterion charge and, in theory, an endless power supply. However, it is possible for the suit's power to be expended before the reactor can replenish it. The Strike Freedom retains a set of hip-mounted rail cannons, although the cannons can swivel behind the main body and swap places with a pair of hip-mounted, combinable beam rifles (similar to the old GAT-X103 Buster Gundam). The Strike Freedom is also armed with a chest beam cannon, head-mounted vulcan guns and a pair of beam sabers. The biggest change in armaments, however, is in the Strike Freedom's wings. Where the original Freedom Gundam carried a pair of plasma beam cannons, the Strike Freedom features eight DRAGOON (Disconnected Rapid Armament Group Overlook Operation Network) units. The DRAGOON units housed in the wings utilize an improved quantum communications system, allowing normal pilots without expanded spatial awareness to use them. Also, like the original Freedom Gundam, the Strike Freedom is capable of docking with the METEOR mobile weapons platform.

In early C.E. 74, the original Freedom Gundam is destroyed in a battle with Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam. The Strike Freedom first enters combat when Kira flies into Earth orbit in the MBF-02 Strike Rouge to assist the Eternal, under attack by ZAFT forces. Afterwards, Kira, accompanied by Lacus Clyne in the ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam, returns to Earth and rendezvous with the Archangel. With ZAFT's attack on the Orb Union (codenamed Operation Fury) in full swing, Kira joins in the defense of Orb and engages Shinn's new Destiny Gundam. When the Three Ships Alliance heads to space to counter ZAFT's forces, Kira participates in the final battle over the Moon. During the battle, he causes heavy damage to Rey Za Burrel's ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam. Using the METEOR, Kira also heavily damages ZAFT's mobile space fortress Messiah. Soon after, the death of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal and the destruction of Messiah mark the end of the war.

Technical and Historical Notes

Before there were five Gundams, there was only one - and it existed strictly on paper. It was AC 180 - fifteen years before they would send their own respective custom-built Gundams to wage guerilla warfare on Earth - and the five eccentric scientists Doctor J, Professor G, Instructor H, Doktor S and Master O, had just completed designing the first mobile suit of that era, the OZ-00MS Tallgeese. Seeing their work being put to oppressive use in the form of mass-produced Leos - and spawned by the assassination of space colony political leader Heero Yuy - the five scientists decided to design their own mobile suit which could overpower OZ's forces. This mobile suit was the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero, and it was a design to truly be feared. In addition to being extremely maneuverable, the Wing Zero was a transformable mobile suit, capable of transforming into a fighter-like "Neo-Bird mode" for added speed and mobility. Sporting Gatling-like machine cannons, wing-mounted vulcan guns and beam sabers, its firepower was topped by an extremely powerful twin buster rifle, capable of wiping out entire groups of mobile suits in a single shot.

However, one more factor put the Wing Zero above everything else: the cockpit's "Zero System," which allowed the pilot's mind to interface directly with the Gundam's combat computer. Although the exact nature of the Zero System's operation is unclear, it appeared to operate by "sampling" the pilot's thoughts and, combining them with current combat data, presented the pilot with various alternate outcomes. Thus, depending on the pilot's mood, the Zero System could tell him/her how to achieve total victory... or decisive defeat. Nevertheless, the mental stresses the Zero System would place on the pilot would be too great for any ordinary human to handle, and even the five mad scientists saw the dangerous turn their work was taking. And thus, the Wing Gundam Zero project was shelved. A copy of the plans went with each of the five scientists when they broke up and went underground to pursue their own individual plans for revolution against OZ. The Wing Zero design would serve as a base model for the five Gundams that would actually be built and sent to Earth.

In AC 195, unfortunate circumstances placed Gundam Sandrock pilot Quatre Raberba Winner in space without a Gundam, with a dead father, and with enemies of the very space colonists he was fighting to free. Wracked by a serious mental imbalance, Quatre discovered the abandoned work of the five scientists, and he built the Wing Zero. Mindless of its dangerous Zero System, Quatre took off to destroy anyone and everyone fighting in space. Though his mental condition was temporary, the Wing Zero's power proved truly terrible, as Quatre used it to destroy an entire space colony. After that, the Wing Gundam Zero would pass from one pilot to another until it landed in the hands of former OZ pilot Zechs Merquise, and then Gundam pilot Heero Yuy - two of the only humans known to actually master the Zero System by making use of its advantages while preventing it from driving them mad.

No, no, and no because:

1. It's got way too much equipment on it (check the maintenance).
2. It has Outburst and Death Mode which is a dumb idea considering that it won't do anything except change the suit's color (PS armor and VPS Armor could do this already) and (probably) the way it performs. I wouldn't know since it doesn't say.
3. The Shinigami System's bound to be some so-called custom tech that would function pretty much in the same way as the ZERO System or some other performance-enhancing tech that already exists in the Gundam world.
4. It's just a Strike Freedom that tries to look like the WZC. The only changes are that it's got some stuff put in it that's not in the SF.
5. It ripped off the color scheme of the Hi-Nu Gundam.
6. It runs on a fake GN Drive.

Finally, it's built under the sad idea that more equipment means more power.
