If you mean those OLD on-going animes, then I don't know.
Sazae-San might answer your question, though.

I think OP is talking about the running anime on CR, like Gintama for example. It doesn't have all it's episodes subbed and uploaded yet.

Naruto, Bleach, One Piece. Loooong animes. There are more short animes now, but that only makes sense because the episodes of long animes probably equals the episodes of all the short animes. Plus companies are probably making more money with a large amount of short shows than long shows that have the potential for getting canceled. And they have to worry about the view ratings staying up and such. It's probably a lot more compicated and with the masses today, short animes are good enough.

Currently, Naruto and Bleach are no good in anime. It's a bunch of fillers. As for One Piece, it's still ranked Shounen #1 serie in both manga and anime in Japan.

It's only normal that there's more short series, it's a 3-6 months project while long series can be on-going for years. More Money from short series than long series? You gotta kidding me. Long series get more money because of sponsorship and merchandises. Surely, rating does play a bit in this. But look, The production cost of one episode of One Piece is ¥10,000,000,(about 92,704 USD)

Long series cannot be canceled once green-lit. Look, they are gonna do a DBZ HD version this Spring. Do we expect it to be good? God knows

Are you online all the time. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. But I think with all the new anime fans, they tend to stick toward short animes with very little plot, instead of committing to something long. But then again, I'm new to it, and I like long anime better. Wasn't D. Gray Man canceled or something? I never saw it, but it seemed really popular.

No, I am not online all the time, but I leave my comp open all the time while the windows are still open. And that, on 2 computers.

News anime fans first get to know anime with long series like Naruto or Bleach or hopefully, One Piece. Surely, most of them must have passed by DBZ first.

D.gray-man ended brutally because the seiyuu (voice actress) of Allen had to hospitalize herself because of some disease. Yes, the story is still on-going in the manga but I heard it's running around the bush.

This is true. And that's really sad about D. Gray man. Well, all I can say is, One Piece is very, very long and is still ongoing therefore it is the perfect answer to the original question. (and it's awesome)
